The IRL wise guys his characters in Casino and Goodfellas were based on were little guys who everybody was scared to death of because they were absolute psychopaths.

Really? I thought most book readers considered the movies a failure because they skipped over the fascinating Vegas adventures of Lucy Mancini's wizard sleeve vagina.

Al Pacino ain't exactly Shaq...

Granted, but Michael Corleone wasn't directly threatening or intimidating anyone. He was maneuvering the chess pieces from behind the scenes.

I would not put it above but for me Patton is close. I could watch the opening monologue on a loop for hours.

I don't really know how to critique a movie other than just by how much I enjoy watching it.....

That's why Sonny was such a good "fit" for her.

This is partially true. In Casino, no question, his character was based on Tony "The Ant" Spilotro, who got that nickname because of his small stature.

In Goodfellas, Pesci's Tommy DeVito was based primarily on the 6'2" gangster Tommy DeSimone, and covered some scenes as a "composite" character for figures such as Paulie's son and so forth. The character was written as a diminutive, but brutal psychopath because they were casting Pesci in the role. Even with little physical resemblance (in addition to being about a foot shorter than DeSimone, Pesci was also 20 to 25 years older in depicting the events) Hill estimated it was a 90 to 95 percent accurate portrayal of DeSimone.

In terms of overall quality of acting and production, probably not. But if you aren't into that genre or simply rank movies based on enjoyment, there are probably quite a few movies that would rank above them.

I'm not a big fan of gangster movies. I prefer fantasy adventure, scifi or a good romantic comedy. As such I would rather watch Lord of Rings, Contact or Pride & Prejudice than the Godfather movies. But that's just me.

Yeah Casino is straight from headlines.

Saw a doc on it once. Even the scene with Pesci walking out of court telling reporters to be nice and be careful. There was news footage that they essentially copy of the IRL guy walking out of court. Don't know what he was saying, but the framing of the shot is very close.

Goodfellas is a much better movie but less accurate to make it a better story. Hell they JUST arrested guys within 5 years for the LeTanza Heist? The movie has DeNiro killing everybody involved except Tommy and Henry.

Out of the Robert's Lounge gang - but Lufthansa was a huge operation, too. A great difference between Goodfellas and Casino is scope. In Goodfellas - Paulie is a capo. That's it. A "senior" gangster with some management responsibilities within the Lucchese Family.

In Casino - Pasquale Cajano's character, Remo Gaggi - was based on Joe Aiuppa - the head of the Chicago Outfit (they don't have 5 families in Chicago, just the Outfit) for the 70s and 80s. The equivalent position of Paulie's boss's boss from Goodfellas.

ETA: In all seriousness, Jimmy whacked 10 people because they could testify regarding the heist or the proceeds - they just all weren't on the crew that did the job.

I never got that feel. Paulie is a Boss in the movie. His IRL person may have been, and I've heard this was all Luchesse family people. But in the movie, Paulie is not treated like a Capo. He's treated like a Don. Tommy is lured to his whacking by "Paulies gonna make you!" I thought only bosses could "open the books"? And nobody would have ok'd the killing of a Capo's underling. Killing Paulie himself? Yes.

Also, Paulie would have been in deep shite for his guy killing a made guy. Maybe he was and it is inferred in the movie and I miss it?

I can talk mob movies all day.

By unmade guys and members of his own crew.

It was because Tommy killed Billy Batts - who was a made guy with the Gambino family - I think that's 100% accurate. That was the deal. You whack him or we whack him - so Paulie had his guys do it. It was an "honor" thing, although that was rapidly going out in the 1980s.

Also, Paulie would have been in deep shite for his guy killing a made guy.

Who? Batts? That's why he killed Tommy. That was the deal. He didn't sanction Tommy killing Batts - that was impulsive. That's why they ditched the body and lied about it. They knew they could all get killed. Once they pieced it together, nobody blamed Jimmy or Henry (and Jimmy was too valuable to the organization). They probably had to pay some money to Batts' family, in addition to "blood for blood."

Critics will say GFII is better than GFI.

While I get some of their points - scenery, DeNiro - GFI is a brilliant masterpiece of cinema and storytelling. It's considered one of "those" movies that is better than the book. BUT.. the book is underrated IMO.

Combined they are probably two of the the best movies ever filmed.

So to answer OP, I personally rank GFI as the best movie of all time.

Goodfellas is a funny, quirky decent story, but GF is epic.

Great post. 100% agree
