Here’s what Boll told Metro about his reasons for retiring:

“The market is dead, you don’t make any money anymore on movies because the DVD and Blu Ray market worldwide has dropped 80 per cent in the last three years. That is the real reason; I just cannot afford to make movies…I can’t go back to student filmmaking because I have made so many movies in my life, and I can’t make cheaper and cheaper movies at my age. It’s a shame. I would be happy to make movies but it is just not financially profitable.”

This will shake the foundations of Hollywood. The repercussions will be felt across the globe, and we all shall suffer.

I am glad he has announced this important news, for it gives us time to prepare our doomsday shelters

So does that mean we might actually get a decent adaptation of a video game to film or series?

Boll also made a bid to direct the 2016 Warcraft movie, but was turned away by the owners of the Warcraft franchise, Blizzard Entertainment who said: "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you."

And the DVD market swoons. I'm sure he'll be greatly missed.

This should become a public holiday.

Now if only Rolland Emmerich could follow him.

House of the Dead is great, though maybe not for the reasons he intended. Netflix should start producing his movies. He's a comedic genius.

Now who will challenge critics to boxing matches when they give crappy reviews to awful movies?
