In short, yes. She dropped it on purpose. All throughout the movie Dottie's superior athleticism is on display: catches while doing splits, behind the back catch...but there is one scene in particular that lends to the thought that she dropped it on purpose.

During the montage about midway through the movie when it was showing the league gaining popularity, there is a play where a runner tries to score from second on a hit to the outfield. There is a relay throw to the plate, Dottie catches it just before being trucked by a runner twice the size of kit.

This scene is important because it shows Dottie's ability to hold onto the ball, and in this particular play she had way less time to prepare herself for the collision when compared to Kit blowing past a stop sign.

Dottie didn't need to win as bad as her sister. She dropped it.

Dottie was a prick.

Unless she changed her mind in the span of 20 seconds...After she told the pitcher EXACTLY how to strike that muthafricker out - her sister - then I don't know what to tell you deniers.

Keep on changing history.

If Laverne's desire was to have Dottie drop it on purpose - then she's a poor filmmaker and a liar.

Everything in that final at bat points to Dottie not dropping the ball on purpose.

So if she dropped it on purpose, Laverne is a fraud, Dottie is bi-polar schizophrenic with multiple personalities and the entire premise of the movie goes out the window.

Goes out the window.

Right, when Jimmy walked toward her with that telegram from the war department, and then handed it to the girl sitting next to her...I think that's the moment perspective came crashing down on her.

She dropped it on purpose because Penny Marshall said so on a commentary, then there was a big uproar about it and now she just says it's up to the viewer to decide.

Somebody needs to convince Geena Davis to do a Reddit AMA so we can ask this shite and get the definitive answer.

IMO.. The biggest indication she dropped on purpose is the opening scene of the movie where she is talking to her grandsons playing basketball...

She told the older of the two grandsons to let the younger one win...

That one scene was the set up for that final play.

She was a chick. It was 50/50 on whether or not she catches the ball anyway.

No. The movie doesn't make any sense if she dropped the ball on purpose - even though she implied she did to her grandchildren. That's the only evidence for it.

You don't turn around and go back to throw a game. You don't do everything in your power to win a game, THEN throw the game.

Now - maybe it's deliberately ambiguous. I can live with that. But, those who are convinced she dropped it on purpose are basing that on 10 frames of film.

The question is asked at least once a year on this board. And at least once a year we all come to the same conclusion - yes, Dottie dropped the ball on purpose.

You people want to change an inspiring story about a young woman overcoming the odds to be able to step out from the shadow of her sister through sheer will into a story glorifying dishonesty of the older sister and the older sister selfishly betraying the confidence of those who depended on her so that she can condescendingly and falsely build up the self esteem of her sister. What is wrong with you people? What kind of sense does that make as a narrative?

That line doesn't even really imply that she dropped the ball on purpose. It just shows that she has come to terms with losing to her sister, and she realizes that she doesn't need to win all the time. She has accepted that it is ok for her sister to occasionally be better than her. Saying that it means that she dropped the ball on purpose just makes the lesson about a condescending lie.

Her smile at Kit being carried off the field is pride in her sister.

You don't show pride if you threw the game.

It's a begrudging smile at first that morphs into pride. She was beaten but happy for Kit.

If she threw the game the smile would be different.

I have been a Dottie didn't do it on purpose from the day the movie came out, and none of the shite that's been floated about what happened in 43 will convince me.

If she wanted Kit to win and she didn't care, why did Dottie come back for Game 7? To throw the game?

Why did she not let Kit strike her out in the top of the 9th?

Why did she tell Ellen Sue she couldn't lay off high fastballs?

Why did she call for the ball as Kit was rounding 3rd?

Why did she bow up and block the plate?

You have to believe that in a split second, as Kit was running into her, Dottie decided to frick her teammates and her manager for her sister's self-esteem.

No, that makes no sense. And I will give you the proof it's not the case.

In the "present," as Old Dottie is about to leave, she talks to her grandsons.

She tells the older one to let the younger one have some shots - not to let him score, or let him win, just to let him have a shot.

She tells the younger one to "kill him."

Dottie gave Kit her shot. She got her on the train and into the league. Everything else, Kit earned because she was that driven, including besting Dottie in the end.
