Been watching Dexter and didn't realize that it was based on Novels. I like the show I'm on season 6. Has anyone read the books and are they worth the read?

The show is better than the books.

Season 6 is the point in the series where you're like "...Ok. This show isn't as good as it started out, but as GREAT as it started out, am I really surprised? Nah. It's still pretty good. I'm enjoying it and I can't wait to see how it all ends! I still really like dexter". Then by 7 you've fallen down the cliff even more and you're like "wtf is going on here? I mean yeah I get that 6 and 7 aren't going to be up there with 1 and 2 (not even going to entertain the thought of another season being up there with 4 lol) but cmon. Some of this shite is laughable. I still like the show...I think? Do I? Idk. But I have to keep watching, I've invested this much time. Surely the writers have had a badass ending in mind since the beginning. That'll redeem them!"
Then by 8 you're like, "man frick you dexter, showtime, my cable and internet service provider, the company who made my television, whoever recommended this show to me, and anyone else that I have met. Wheres the booze"

Spot freakin on. So much time invested to only result in frustration.

The final few seasons aren't as bad as being made out to be here. If you like the series, you will enjoy them. Just don't expect them to be as great as it once was. Then ending though? Yeah, that was quite dumb. They had the chance to go out really great and then cowarded out.

I don't know. After season 4 I was completely on board with calling Dexter one of my favorite 3 shows of all time. Like ever. 5 was still alright, no complaints about it really. 6-8 were such trash that it completely and totally changed my viewpoint of the whole series. I LOVED 1-4 and actually rewatched them 2 weeks ago. I did not enjoy 6-8 though despite that.

Read the first two. Season One is based on the first book. The second book is....interesting. I don't know if Showtime could show some of the things that happen in that book. While TV Dexter is overall a likable guy, book Dexter is not at all, IMO.
