I think it would have been great if at the end there was an extra scene.

A scene that showed the "establishing contact this the military base up north" from the base perspective.

The scene would open with Oldman's guys on the radio in San Francisco. The scene would change to a pan in from above of the base. In the background we would still hear the guy's trying to contact over the radio. Then, as we hear the response we are shown a mic/receiver in a room on the base. We zoom out to see an Ape working the mic....

i thought this movie was extremely mediocre and wished i wouldn't have wasted my time on it

i was basically laughing at the scenes where the monkeys were having emo/sentimental interaction

hell, i liked the first apes movie but this one had too much ridiculousness in it..

I thought it was good but a tad overrated. Shouldn't have a 91% on RT. I think it should be in the high 70s low 80s personally.

Well, it's no Transformers, but give it a break.

Since they didn't show the people on the other end of the radio and you never heard a clear radio message... I thought that the troop trucks would show up at the end of the movie and the doors would open to reveal apes driving the trucks.

A similar ending to what Boulle did in the novel.

If anything I think it's being underrated

The scene where Malcolm slips into the shadows...damn

Great villain

Great action

Great performances

Tense throughout

Great characters who behave logically

Character development

Plenty of subtext (subtle and non subtle but not beating you over the head)

Iconic images

Great musical score

Perfect run time

Incredible but sensible special effects

Diverse special effects (the art of the soundstage, makeup, costume...it is not just a cgi shitfest)

Characters faced with difficult choices with serious consequences

Never takes the easy way out (Caesar doesn't just let koba fall, he directly murders him and Caesar telling Malcolm war is inevitable and moving forward...it doesn't wrap it up in a bow)

Guns - a lot of people said this was a message on gun control, but like the entire movie it's very gray and lets you make up your own mind while still maintaining social relevance)

The comparisons to empire are legit (someone else said this and it's spot on)
1. Better than a worthy original in every way
2. Maintains the tension throughout
3. (Mine) darker tone but doesn't feel forced or get carried away

IF I had to say something negative about it, it has a bit of a lessened sense of adventure than empire (which is a perfect movie in my opinion) and lacks romance (which there is no room for anyway)

I think it's better than TDK (another underrated but slightly flawed movie) or any science fiction movie made in the last 30 years.

Best movie in a long long time unless you just love oscar bait. It blends serious filmmaking with the summer blockbuster perfectly

You do know that RT is a percentage of critic reviews, right. They can't just make it 70%. 91% is the percentage of overall positive reviews.

I admit I was a bit worried when I heard it was going to have a gun control message. Glad it didn't get too preachy on it. I felt the theme of ignorance and prejudice/aggression were nicely handled.

This movie had a gun control message like Saving Private Ryan had a gun control message.

he is comparing it to movies that have scored 70%. How did that go over your head?

Is it unreasonable for a guy to want 70-80% of critics to like a movie that he thought was overrated?

Yes. IMO, Dawn should get nominated for best picture and Serkis deserves a nod. Anything less and it would be underrated, but that's just me.

You know what movies don't have an antigun message? Michael Bay movies.

Well said.

I wouldn't say best sci-fi in 30 years, though.

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ sequel won't feature a major time jump
quote:

(CBR) War looms in the world of the "Planet of the Apes," and to hear director Matt Reeves tell it, we’re going to see it for ourselves.

Despite the 10-year time-jump between "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," Reeves tells The Playlist the sequel to "Dawn" won’t feature a similar leap.

“I don’t necessarily think that there will be as big a leap between films,” he said. “I see Caesar as a seminal figure in ape history and he’s a mythic character. He’s essentially like their Moses and I think Caesar having to grapple with what it means to engage in this conflict that he doesn’t really want to be a part of and how that cuts at his core is going to be one of the great challenges for the character. I also think it’s a generational story. He has children and I think it’s going to be … to me there are many chapters of this mythic ape journey towards the original ’68 movie.”

Indeed, Reeves thinks “there are a number of films and stories” to be told between the events of "Dawn" and the far-future world of the first "Planet of the Apes" film — and that’s what keeps him excited.

“The question is: are the audiences interested in going on that journey with us?” he said. “The disparity between the way the world looks in ‘Dawn’ and the way it looked in the ’68 film is huge so how do we get from here to there? Then when we do get there, if we do get there, how is that world different by virtue of the new point of view that we’ve taken?”

The untitled sequel to "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is scheduled for July 29, 2016.
I'm not sure how I feel about this except Matt Reeves is directing, so i'm all in. And Caesar is in it, so

No shite, Sherlock. I know how RT works. I would continue to discuss why I think the movie is overrated, but by the looks of your Avatar pic, I think it's pretty pointless.

Saying something is overrated is one thing. Saying a number of people shouldn't like a movie is another.

I liked Dawn, but not as much as some on this board. I thought it was a good, solid movie. But the only "best of" category I'd put it in is "best movies of this year, so far."
