I vote NPH or Norm McDonald

Honestly, I think NPH would be a surprisingly great choice.

No way in hell they would ever trust something like this with Norm. He'd just frick with the guests non-stop.

And Colbert is too defined by his character. I like Colbert but I don't see him as being that great of a choice.

Love me some Colbert report but I have to wonder how he will play without his prime schtick

He's actually funny though so he can be funny without the shtick unlike Fallon.

Colbert is a great choice for CBS in terms of buzz and initial ratings. There isn't a better name to bring in the type of audiences late night is gunning for now. My only concern is he had basically perfected the Colbert Report, and he's able to get away with so much because of his character and Comedy Central. Out of character and on CBS he'll still be great, and might even be the best network late night out there, but I don't think there's anyway it'll be as good as the Report

Should be fun to watch he and Fallon fight for viewers
meh, Colbert will have a small window to gain viewers. Fallon has really been a homerun on Late Night. He has killed it so far. Colbert's margin of error will be very slim if he hopes to cut into Fallon's ratings.

I think you're underestimating colbert's appeal and the dedication of his fans

Curious to see how the late night wars play out seeing as Colbert and Fallon are real good friends and have been on each others shows countless times

Im curious to see his monologue without the schtick but i think hell be the best interviewer of the bunch. He does great and funny interviews.

I think he'll bring some of his schtick to his monologues, he'll just tone down the political side of it. During his interviews is where you'll really see a shift in styles. At least I hope that's the case

This.

If you think that Colbert is solely defined by his Colbert Report character, you haven't seen him outside of his Comedy Central show.

He's one of the best and smartest interviewees that you'll see or hear. Combine that with how he handles guests on his current show and you have a hit.

My guess is that Fallon will continue to do well with younger viewers and Colbert will nail down Letterman's demo and a younger demo as well.

Keep in mind that Fallon is aging as well. He may have a few years left before the younger generation sees him as a nostalgia act.

If CBS was smart Colbert would take over at the end of the year if they wait too late into 2015 Fallon will already over a year head start on Colbert

Colbert is 10 years older than Fallon and has been around the comedy scene alot longer.

Fallon's faggy song parodies and dancing won't come off as well when he's 50.

Does this put John Oliver in position to move back to Comedy Central?

He'll be as hip as Bob Hope dressing up as Fonzie.

If he continues his long played out Colbert Nation act, I won't be watching like I'm not watching now. I could agree with everything he says and it wouldn't make a difference. it's just too annoying.

Would be cool. John Oliver got better as his run went on last summer on The Daily Show. I wonder how long his contract with HBO is though.

The Oliver Report. And pronounce Oliver like Colbert.

There are parts of Fallon's late night routine that seem like imitations of Carson. Even things as subtle as the way he stands during his monologue with one hand in a pocket

Fallon seems to have learned the lesson of the Letterman/Leno/Conan fallout... don't be too weird too often. If you weird out people's mothers and fathers you lose viewers.

i'm basing my opinion off of numbers. Fallon has great ratings right now. Another 12 months of him absolutely destroying Letterman isn't going to make it easier on Colbert. And, Jimmy got to have his time on Late Night getting better and improving the quality of his show. It was crap when he started, and he was terrible.

Colbert won't have that luxury. If Colbert comes out bad and it takes him 2 months to improve the show, the ratings are going to get ugly.

This has nothing to do with whether I think Colbert can be a good host. But, he's going to be in a very, very difficult spot in trying to even the ratings battle.
