Bout what I expected. Looks great but sounds like people didn't think it's scary.

Will probably not watch, though, because I hate the genre.

When will people learn. CGI is not scary.

There's a good review out there that says it isn't a "ghost story," but a "story with ghosts." Slight difference in intent.

Still interested as long as its decent.

It's supposed to be a very R rated movie if that changes any minds. I'm willing to watch it but I'm so far behind at the movies I'm not sure if I will wait or not.

Valuable insight. What other things do you not like?

I worry that the previews are giving away all the jump scares. It seems like each one that I see shows a different moment that is supposed to freak you out.

From what the reviews I read said, the ghosts aren't really the main jut of horror for the movie.

It's kind of obvious from the trailers that he shoehorned ghosts into it so people might actually see it. He'll never make an English-speaking film as good as Devil's Backbone or Pan's.

I love horror movies but it just looks stupid to me

I don't know of shoehorned is the right word because ghosts have always played a part in gothic romance but maybe deceptive from a marketing standpoint.

Well - that isn't really the point. The point is - once they have CGI in their hands, directors can't help themselves.

When visual effects were practical and limited - they had to be used judiciously and cleverly hidden - if not, like when Spielberg overused the shark in Jaws - it requires some cooperation from the audience to not notice the obviously fake shark.

But, with beautiful CGI available now - they end up getting wooden performances from the actors who are all green suited up in an empty room - rather than act against the effects (however good or bad the practical visual effects might have been in the good ole days) - and because we really know it isn't real, the beautiful effects end up looking cartoonish and fakey - if filmmakers would rediscover restraint and the power of wonder in storytelling, instead of beating us over the head with how great they can make fake stuff look - we would all be better off.

To me, that is the point. CGI takes me out of the immersion. It just doesn't work for horror movies. It probably looks beautiful, but it doesn't scare me in the least bit. You are probably right about some of the other things.

I was expecting a House of Seven Gables/Turn of the Screw more than anything else.

Same here. IMO tv series are much more appealing nowadays.

Yep looks interesting but the CGI makes me think it might be cheesy.

Prequels, sequels, reboots, spinoffs, and able-bodied people on disability or welfare.

It has a great cast and an extremely talented director. I will give it a look.
