Barristan Selmy

The last honorable man left in the book, IMO.

I fear his days may be numbered, though.

I love Barristan too, but I would also put Davos up there as an honorable man.

I want to see Barristan take on his old mates in Kigsguard and kick their arse.

Maester Aemon, blind and dying...thinking he was just a boy waking from a horrible dream, calling out to Egg...

That really worked my arse over!

This got me to thinking...

Has anyone in the ASOIAF series died an honorable death, with steel in hand, defending home and family?

I can't come up with one. Not a major character anyway. The were some Starks that died with steel in had, but it usually involved treachery and deceit.

Oberyn Martell and Ser Vardis Egen are two.

Breakspear was killed by his brother on accident. Just seems like a shitty death that he didn't deserve.

But he died standing up for the innocent and defending the weak. Thats a death for a true Knight.

Alright so I've posted the schedule for the reread and the thread. If there's anything you want me to add in the OP let me know.

Let's talk about Barbrey Ryswell...what does she want with the crypts? She feigns hatred for the Starks but also is not shy about letting the Freys know that the North remembers. Anyone else think she might be looking to let in Stannis and his host?

I think we talked about it awhile back, but I think she's putting on a front with her open disdain for the Starks. I think she's setting up to let someone in. Not sure if it's Stannis or possibly the Hooded Man (if you don't subscribe to the Theon is the Hooded Man theory).

I was reading westeros today and apparently Theon had thought back on that conversation in the crypts and remembered that the Ryswells were one of the mos t loyal families to the Starks and is wondering about her true loyalties.

The point of that Ryswell exchange with Theon could have been to reinforce the concepts of "The North Remembers" and the longstanding loyalty of such houses to the Starks.

It Is Known: Davos is headed for Rickon. Lord Stark will soon return to Winterfell.

ETA: I will bump this bitch until they tie an anchor to my cold dead feet and drop me in the Trident.

I agree and I think that the Ryswells are still firmly behind house Stark. I don't think any other family could ever truly hold The North at this point.

One of the things GRRM has stated is that he does not like writing from the POV of little kids (i.e. Rickon).

Therefore, it makes sense that he would use a Davos POV to tell the story of the return of Lord Stark.

Going more on is Varys, a Blackfyre, how does he know all the secrete passages in the Red Keep. I do not think Aerys told him, because the king was paranoid and I do not see him telling others about secret ways around the red Keep.

I think Varys knew because it was told too him either because he is a Blackfyre or is working for them.

While I think Varys definitely has Targaryen ties, be it BF or Targ, I think he more than likely just discovered the passages on his own with the help of his little birds. Remember he did the same basic thing at Braavos he has a knack for that sort of thing.

Theon says to Stannis in the same sample chapter
quote:

"The north remembers. The Red Wedding, Lady Hornwood's fingers, the sack of Winterfell, Deepwood Motte and Torrhen's Square, they remember all of it." Bran and Rickon. They were only miller's boys. "Frey and Manderly will never combine their strengths. They will come for you, but separately. Lord Ramsay will not be far behind them. He wants his bride back. He wants his Reek."
quote:

In the Pink Letter it says: "I want my bride back. I want my Reek."

Sorry to bring back an old topic but I just ran across this post from Belle, nice catch. This is precisely the type hint GRRM gives that the letter actually comes from Stannis or someone in Stannis' camp. Someone who heard Theon's statement, not Ramsey/Roose. Nice Catch.
