I can almost guarantee he dies doing it or soon thereafter. As uncliche as GRRM is, he's been setting this one up for a while. Maybe his redemption act was saving Jeyne, but I doubt it. I think he eventually saves Bran or Rickon or both, and dies in the process, having learned the hard lesson of love forged by intimacy and friendship over "love" forged by bonds in blood (or, I guess put another way, learning who your true friends are).

I shouldn't even grace that post with a response. Killing two children to avoid mockery isnt selfish? Are you even serious?

He wasn't avoiding mockery he was avoiding mutiny.
Not saying that makes it excusable because it doesn't put it puts his actions under a different light.

He was going to have to abandon Winterfell either way.
Posted on 3/25/13 at 7:49 pm to NIH
exactly, how did he think he could hold Winterfell? Did he just assume that there were zero armies left in The North to retake it?

Right
Mutiny or a northern reclamation happens either way.

Sure, why not. I just don't want some kind of story of redemption, I can't think of anything he could do that would redeem him in my eyes, maybe GRRM will find a way to do it but I doubt it
I never expected to like Jaime like I do.

I just don't see what people see in him. If Ramsay had just lopped off his head he would have died a piece of shite in everyone's eyes. Him being flayed doesn't change that for me.

Hey folks, where is the best place to download or find a cheap copy of The Hedge Knight or The Sworn Sword ? Thank you in advance.

It's not just being flayed. It's the complete surgical annihilation of his very being. They took EVERYTHING from him. Every thing that makes a man a man. Everything that makes a human a human has been removed from him. The horrible part is that they left his mind semi-intact. They took his name but they let him remember when he had one. They let him remember everyone of his past mistakes.
NO ONE deserves that. He has paid for his sins. We don't love Theon, we pity him.

Besides being grossed out I didn't really feel much pity for him.

Him wishing he died with Robb at the Red Wedding is

That's about the only point in book five where I felt a little pity for Theon. He fricked over the north in a single night.
Posted on 3/25/13 at 9:12 pm to Carson123987
It wasn't him wishing he died that got to me. It was when he realized that Robb and the Starks were a better family to him than his own. He realized that he already had a place where he belonged and that he should've died with his brother.

As I said, I feel for Theon and feel that he has become selfless, but he sure as hell started off as a selfish SOB.

Did you two even read the books? He took Winterfell for 2 reasons: 1 it had never been done before and 2 he thought the Krakens would rally to him and they'd have the strongest hold in the North. He'd be a success in his father's eyes and he'd gain the acceptance of his people, an acceptance he had never fully felt before. In that manner, I suppose he was selfish, but his motivation comes from a pitiable place: being an outsider at every turn - never quite a wolf, never quite a kraken.
As for killing the two kids, no it wasn't selfish. It was self preservation. His hold on Winterfell was tinuous. If it was known Bran and Reckon had escaped, he was doomed. Mockery was a biproduct of failure and he couldn't fail. Not there. Not at that time.

You could read "The Ghost of Winterfell" and not feel bad for him? I was like you until this chapter, thinking he deserved all the shite that was happening to him. that chapter turned me into a heavy Theon sympathizer, and think he has become one of the greatest characters in the series. I'd say next to The Mountain vs The Red Viper, "The Ghost of Winterfell" is my favorite chapter in the series (maybe tied with Jaime saves Brienne from the bear pit and his dream in the dungeon).

I started to and then realized tht it was Theon and any remorse he felt was only because his plan didn't work. If his plan had worked and he'd have taken and held Winterfell he wouldn't feel bad. I pitty him enough to hope he does quickly and immediately to be put out of his misery
