Robin Williams was excellent as a serious actor

He really was. A lot of people look at movies like Mrs. Doubtfire and Patch Adams as comedy, but both had serious undertones and subplots (divorce, child estrangement, terminal disease, mental illness) that he pulled off brilliantly.

He was also really good in the first part of Hook when he had to play serious adult businessman Peter who abhors make-believe and is kind of an a-hole.

Hell, he was a great tragic. Character in Jumanji. One of the GOAT actors, comedic or otherwise.

I can't believe I haven't watched this yet...I keep meaning to, and keep putting it off. Will watch sometime over Christmas vacation.

Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come.

Even more depressing movie knowing he committed suicide in real life.

One of my favorite Quotes from that movie.

"Is this an occupational hazard of soulmates? One's no good without the other?"

Robin Williams was just gifted. I don't even consider him a comedic actor like some others listed in this thread i.e. Carrey, Sandler, Ferrell.

Robin was just one of the best pure actors that ever lived IMO. His park bench speech in Good Will Hunting is perfection.

I've heard it can be easier to do serious over comedy

Someone asked Vince Gilligan about that and he said that comedic people have better range. Funny people can do serious, but serious people can't do funny.

I've heard this too.

I forget the movie (it was just 'ok'), but Steve Martin did a romance flick once. He was flirting with a gloves sales chick in a Macy's or something like that.

He played a single, sort of lonely older guy, and I just remember that he was excellent in it. Extremely expressive, but very understated performance. Really no comedy in it at all.

Most actors agree, comedy is the most difficult genre to do successfully.
