This is crazy...is it accepted or public domain or co-opted.

I had always heard about this...

But I just watched 3 random comedy shows on Netflix...from 3 different comedians and they all used the same bit...(twice) and variations 3 times and other similarities on other bits.

Patton Oswalt 2009
Bill Burr 2012 (exact same bit about self-serve checkouts at stores from Oswalt from 2009)

....and basically exact same bit about hitting women from Chris Rock)

Tom Segura 2014 (exact same bit taken from Burr's 2012 Special)

I find this crazy...I just watched 3 seemingly random comedy specials on Netflix...and I'm hearing the same material thrice.

Honestly, I dont see how its possible to NOT steal material whether on purpose or by accident. Some stuff you just have to retain subconsciously.

Bernie Mack show had a fantastic episode on this topic.

It's OK to reuse and recycle stuff. But if you never have your own material that's when it becomes a problem.

It just seemed so damn weird...I literally just randomly clicked on Netflix to watch one Special after another by different comedians...

And in 3 Specials I heard the same bit...true they mixed up the delivery but it was the exact same observation...with the exact same hatred...

"what the frick, I now have to be the checkout clerk at the Supermarket? When did I sign up for this job? I give you the money, you are supposed to the rest. That's the deal! Or self-serve sandwhich shops."

And Bill Burr took some lines directly from Chris Rock and his domestic violence bit.

Joe Rogan helped ruin Carlos Mencia's career by constantly calling him a joke thief. Mencia wasn't that funny anyway. Dennis Leary got a lot of shite for ripping off Bill Hicks but was still successful. Apparently its not that uncommon.

I guess like the "short story or novels" there's only so many themes...and ideas...

I never really thought comedians did this so prevalent...but it probably has been going on for some time...they all just talk about the same stuff...I guess it's okay if they mix up the delivery jokes even its totally the same theme and topic that is quite obvious.

They hear a bit...like it, mix it up and re-deliver it.

I have seen the Leary - Hicks videos.

He didn't rip off jokes, he ripped off his act.

Leary is and was always a total hack.

I just thought this was 80's shite in backwater nightclubs and everything had been handled and dealt with in the internet age...that you couldn't hide in HBO "Specials!" of all places and stealing material.

Leary definitely ripped off his angry white guy delivery style.

Yeah he was pretty big, and as mentioned before Rogan called him out, he fell off the map after that.

Louis CK had an odd dialogue with Dane Cook about this, I think in season 2 of Louis

And even the smoking, which was creepy.

And Bill Hicks died of cancer...

And Dennis Leary's greatest hit was "No Cure for Cancer"

What's odd is I was in London a few years back visiting family and they love Bill Hicks over there like an icon and frankly never gave two shits about Leary.

While Leary is the bigger star in the US...for being a thief.

We reward thieves and punish geniuses...Mericu history.

This goes back forever.

Milton Berle was known as the Thief of Bad Gags.

The Three Stooges ripped on Abbot and Costello for Costello stealing Curley Howard's act.

Abbot and Costello's "Who's on first" bit was an old vaudeville sketch that others had done for years.

Have you ever listened to music before?

This is a large part of art, people use other people's stuff. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. It certainly isn't ok. Just look at how Dane cook and Carlos mencia are viewed by their "colleagues".

That's more akin to their version of a frequently covered song. How many people have recorded "Blue Moon"? No one "stole" it.

The problem comes in when a comedian slips in a joke here and there amongst their own material.

On a tangent but, the other day on satellite radio I heard a black comedian who seems to be mimicking Mitch Hedberg's delivery and style of joke. I forgot his name. Is anyone familiar with him?

They say Denis Leary is the absolute worst at ripping off other comedians. Bill Hicks once said he smokes so Leary can get cancer.

Side note: why would anyone complain about getting to check themselves out. I prefer it this way. I can bag the way I want and I'm much more efficient than the person usually behind the register.

The real problem is the people who do t know how the self checkout works and holds up the line.
