I thought he was fantastic in the Oceans' movies.

Yep, I thought it was well done.

He wasn't struggling the entire movie with wrath.

I think he was. Even before they knew Spacey was the killer he would talk about how sick the guy that's doing all of this stuff must be, as if he wished he could deal with him personally.

That means nothing, he's a cop, I would hope he felt that way.

he is a terrible actor.
A bit much for me, but when he exploded on to the scene with that amazing performance in Thelma and Louise, I expected more of his career.

Those could have been other examples I used.

ETA: And 12 monkeys as well.

Idt he is bad as a lead. But the scene was kind of off.

Although when he is fighting back tears holding the gun, getting serious, back to tears and serious again. That was good imo

I thought he was great in money ball, fight club, basterds, killing them softly, and Jessie James

You do realize that John Doe knew about Pitts character from the start right?

He knew that Pitt had a struggle, and his masterpiece would be having Pitt commit the final sin. This was planned by Doe before the first murder.

So, yes, Pitts character was struggling with wrath the entire film, albeit his entire life. John Die knew this and planned to culminate his journey by exploiting it.

Any man put in the position of Detective Mills would probably do the same thing in that situation. So you're going to tell me that John Doe knew that Mills was going to transfer to that city a year ahead of time (when Doe had begun torturing Victor the sloth victim) and punish him because he was an angry person? Seems pretty far fetched.

That being said, the character of Mills is supposed to be that of the 'superhero'. A cop, who has every intention of getting evil off of the streets. Naive, in that he can't understand the mentality of someone like John Doe who does what he does.

Doe Picked Somerset and Mills because he knew Somerset was smart enough to follow the clues and Mills was brazen enough to not listen to what Somerset was telling him.

At the end of it all, all of the Doe's victims (aka sinners) ended up dead except one. Mills. Seems to me like Doe's masterpiece was incomplete.

This.

It was like bad...and then natural....bad again....then natural again, for most of the scene.

I think as he neared the trigger pull his performance was more convincing, but the moment was already blown with the up and down acting.

Definitely over-acting. It was just her head. Now had it been her tits....

It was superficially odd, but it illustrated his choice. He was flashing between grief and wrath, and in the end, he chose wrath, and that's when John Doe's plan came to fruition.

I just think he's an erratic actor period

There are times when I think he does a good job (mostly less is more type roles) and times where I think he's sort of gone Robert Goulet (self mockery) like in Inglourious Basterds and other times where he just can't exactly nail down what he wants to do with a scene. I guess what that implies is I just don't think he inhabits his roles
