people will think Chappelle is being named because of his current special, but honestly, i've heard comedians talk about seeing him in a club when he was 17 years old and he was already so fricking good they thought it was crazy.

taking 10 years off does hurt his legacy though

Chappelle is the best. I don't think Pryor could just go to a club and do a 4 hour set like it was nothing

Some of the best from my day:

Bob Newhart
George Goebel
Bob Hope (saw him in a concert at the old Cow Barn at LSU - it was a fantastic performance).

I don't think that's fair. Carlin couldn't do it either. But Pryor and Carlin were poetry, perfecting their dialog for each piece they had. People like Chapelle and Burr are cut from a different cloth and not as dependent on a set. Adam Carolla and Norm MacDonald don't have any planned sets and just improv once they're on stage reacting off of the audience.

Carlin and Pryor though, you were there at their own pleasure. They were here to share their view with you, not interact with the audience. It's just apples and oranges comparing the two styles.

Burr does as well. He'd be like Burr in hating Hillary and Trump, and thinking that the election should have been between Bernie and Paul.

i agree. i know Joe Rogan isnt a great comedian but he was loving Burr on his election podcast telling every HIllary supporter how stupid they were for being mad about trump being elected. Rogan doesnt like trump, but he knows its not as simple as voting 1 way is right and the other way is ruining america at least

Love Chapelle's stand-up. Went to see him in New Orleans and even though I thought he caved to the low hanging political fruit a bit too much for my taste, he still made me belly laugh a lot.

Killin Them Softly was as good as it gets.

That was great when that feminist started off saying that the whole center of the country is sexist and racist and that's the only reason she lost, and then Doug Stanhope stands up and says "Hold on a sec, as his caddy let me put Bill Burr's golf ball on his tee and give him some advice on what club he should use." And then Bill annihilates the two feminists present without any effort singlehandedly.

Carlin was obviously sort of an old hippie.

But he really just called out bullshite from both sides...he was anti-bullshite.

And during his later years it wasn't that much political commentary but societal and culture and religion too.

Carlin. Hands down, at least for me. He and Pryor helped progress comedy to where it is today.

I realize with the new specials everyone is riding Chapelle's dick, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Bo Burnham more. That kid has a special something that kills on stage with his theatrics. And he's so young. I'm excited to see where his career goes.

What I think is unappreciated about Bo Burnham is that he's not just a comedian, he's an entertainer and an artist. And a critic. He's a damn genius. Give him some time and he could well be in the conversation.
