I thought Automata was pretty good.

I don't know about "best" but alright.

Idiocracy may be the most prophetic film of our time.

Not sure if it qualifies as "lesser known" but Equilibrium

Zardoz!

Pretty hard to top Sean Connery running around in a red codpiece.

Predestination applies, but mostly takes place in the past. Great movie that I can't recommend enough. Go into it as blind as possible.

Aforementioned Equilibrium was pretty good. Kind of popular on this forum though.

Children of Men is the GOAT and didn't have a good box office, but obviously got a ton of critical acclaim. Just had to mention it in the unlikely case you hadn't seen it.

ETA: And Snowpiercer was the tits.

Yeah, that if it qualifies. Also Dark City as well to a certain extent.

Still haven't watched this one yet. Been on my IMDB watchlist (now ~700 long) for a while.

And if we're using post apocalyptic films as dystopian, "Z for Zachariah" was solid and barely spoken of. Not great, but worth a watch.

And I guess I'll throw Gattaca out there. Not much of a box office, but it's pretty widely praised on this forum

Dark City is well known here, but in general, I find that people have never heard of it.

Existenz is also good, though incredibly strange.

Existenz is solid, but I like it a little bit less every time I watch it. Still very much worth a watch.

Naked Lunch (a fellow Cronenberg film) also deserves a mention. Dystopian, but not future.

Got to go with this. Cauron pretty much gets a lifetime pass for it.

Children of men was great. Was watching an old 1980s Christian film about the world after the rapture happens and the antichrist is in full power. Called "years of the beast".

Got me thinking about some really obscure films I may have not seen. Its hard to bore me with films as I like to watch as many as possible. (& never know when I can find a decent soundbyte to throw in a song).

Trust me, watch Predestination. Only a handful of other people on TD have seen it, and it only barely meets the dystopian qualification, but it's really good. It's one of the movies that, after you watch it, you're shocked that one of the typically super-safe movie studios gave the green light to. Ethan Hawke has chosen some great, risky Sci-Fi films to star in.
