Didn't they say that they killed Sammy Jenkins already?

He already killed John G, the guy that broke into the house and raped the wife + knocked him out. Sammy Jenkins was the guy that had the same condition and killed his wife via repeated insulin injections.

The earlier scene in the movie showed Dottie holding on to the ball during a collision. That scene was put in the movie to show that she was fully capable of taking the hit.

doesn't mean she can't drop it. I can show literally hundered's of pics of Wes Welker catching the ball, he still dropped a big one Sunday. Sometimes shite happens.

Why did Dottie smile while looking back at Kitt who finally got her chance to be the hero?

Because she was happy for her sister.

But Dottie had everything she wanted: husband, family, etc.

All Kit had was baseball and she knew that.

It's pretty clear that Dottie is done with baseball by the end of the movie. Not that this is proof, but when I watched the movie I had to work to convince myself that she dropped it on accident.

Hell no. Great movie, but I really hate the end. It didn't ruin the movie, I just do not agree with the choice made. Which I think was what they were trying to do.

I also think that Casey's character knew he did the wrong thing at the end of the movie. The daughter would have had a much brighter future with Morgan Freeman.

That's fine, but then why come back and play? She could have just supported her sister from the stands? I have a hard time beleiving in the heat of the moment, someone that competitive ( and we see all movie long Dottie is uber competitive) would on the spur of the moment just decide to drop it so Kitt can have the glory. And if it was premeditated, why not just strikeout instead of getting the hit? If she feels bad after that cause Kitt is crying, why tell the pitcher Kitts weakness? Tell her Kitt loves high fast balls, so throw something else.

Some people just can't accept stuff happens some times. Crazy terrorist couldn't do 9/11, had to be a conspiracy. No way some loner could kill the POTUS and destroy Camelot, had to be the CIA/Mob/Castro. LSU couldn't just come out flat and with a bad game plan, must have been a pre game fight, JJ was at Harrah's all night

This is exactly how I felt and I was like, "What the frick."

Then this girl that was in the room was like, "Are you kidding? That girl needs to be with her mother, not some foster parent."

I was like ....

Then these two other girls were like, "Yeah!"

I had to leave.

God, this movie has been the thorn in my side for so long. I love it, and think I have it fully realized, but very discussion of it always leaves me needing to watch it again.

Exactly. Just when you think you have it all down, someone throws something else out there and you lose it all again.

When I saw the movie I remember thinking that she didn't know she was going to throw the game until the very minute she dropped the ball. I mainly thought this because of the way the scene was shot: the ball didn't go flying out of her hand from force, it rolled out slowly - as though she decided at the last second to let it go.

Of course, this is not proof at all. Just the impression it left on me.

Until that point she was determined to beat her sister, IMO.

This is the most compelling evidence, IMO. As the true competitor we know Dottie is, I believe she would have felt more disappointed in herself for letting her team down. Instead, she shows nothing but signs of satisfaction and happiness for what she's done for her sister by dropping it on purpose.

Haven't read DADoES? or WCRIFYW, but I can vouch for this:

For a complete mindfrick read Ubik.

Or if you want to have your world view flipped on it head for a little bit, read VALIS.

I spent quite a while thinking about VALIS after reading it.

(though I never understood why she left other than dramatic effect,

Originally, she left because there was a love plot between her and the coach (Tom Hanks). The makers of the film decided to cut this subplot out in the final version of the film, for obvious reasons.

I assume that's Penny Marshall's point, its up to the audience members to decide for themselves if she dropped it, but a fun debate

Another for the OP : Whats in the case in Pulp Fiction?

it is obviously debatable but if you love your sister more than you love baseball it is certainly possible

there were times playing sports against my brother than I wanted to beat him more than anything and other times I didn't mind losing at all (didn't play as hard as I could have because it felt like he deserved a win)

agree with that

but I would add moral ambiguity is a very important part of real life and good fiction. people are a lot less likely to fully understand their own actions than they think they are. If there isn't some ambiguity in the fiction then it isn't a very good representation of real life

Regardless, no way the Peaches lose if Dottie doesn't go AWOL for the first 6 games of the World Series, or if Nelson doesn't sweep Marla Hooch off of her feet and marry her mid-season. Jimmy Dugan was robbed of the very first AAWBL championship.

That's what happens when girls try to play baseball. Girls are for sleeping with after you play the game.
