Before his meltdown, would you consider Mel Gibson a top 5 action movie actor?

Once you cross the J's on that level he did, there's no going back from it.

Get the Gringo was last I remember (blah).... Was the 9 inch nail hand hammering the nail in the Passion.

Braveheart is one of all time greats

We Were Soldiers is not an action movie.

The Patriot sucked.

I didn't like his Mad Max movies.

Lethal Weapons were great.

Braveheart is not an action movie.

Payback was great.

Ransom was good.

I love Mavrick.

Maybe not even in the top 10.

I still would. Mad max and lethal weapon alone pretty much seal the deal.

I preferred the Bruce Willis & Mel Gibson "every guy" type of 80's action hero image as opposed to the roided up Arnold & Sylvester.

No matter what you think of his movies, there was a time in the late 80's through the 90's that he was a major star. And a lot of what he did qualifies as action.

The patriot sucked.

Braveheart, Leathal Weapon, and Mad Max were legit.

he still probably is top 5, just because there aren't a lot of action movie only mega- stars....

Arnold
Bruce Willis
Stallone

The rest of the guys like Statham, chuck norris, Van Damme are kind of a different breed, as they arent huge box office draws, and are really limited in the types of films they are in.

then you have a tom cruise or a will smith, who are mega-stars that have done many successful action movies amongst a bunch of dramas and other genres. they are much more versatile then any of these other guys. Cruise might be at the point though where you could consider him an action star.

Mel Gibson has fallen off the map as of late, but he was at one point in the early 90s top 3 along with Willis and Arnold. Minus the really weird behavior, his career is similar to clint eastwood, as eastwood was basically an action star only and then started excelling as a director of really good non-action movies.

edit- Im not going to include guys like John Wayne, Eastwood, etc. as "action stars"

I wasn't putting every movie.

Off the top of my head, my favorite movie of his is "What Women Want."

The Road Warrior is the best pure action movie ever made. That series alone is enough for me… but Lethal Weapon is what puts him in the upper tier. Gibson and Willis on one side of the coin… Arnold and Stallone on the other.

He was one of the biggest movie stars of his era. The Lethal Weapon series and Braveheart especially were very well received overall.

top 5 of all time? No.

Despite that resume of action, I never thought of Gibson as an action star.

But his films sure did draw.

I read the OP as top 5 at the time. He definitely isn't top 5 all time.

He just finished production on Hacksaw Ridge a WWII piece he directed ... Solid cast and supposedly decent story so will be interesting to see if he emerges from movie jail
