Eh. The SNL people can’t actually do their jobs and y more and not break character. It’s ruined a lot of skits over the years, yet people seem to act like it is some special skill they have.

Sucking at your job is now somehow lauded

Thanks Jimmy Fallon. He started the trend. It was taboo and frowned for SNL actors to break. Lorne went soft.

All in all that was one of the better SNL episodes in a while

The last two episodes (Gosling and Kristin Wiig) have been the best since the Nate Bargatze episode last year. The "Jumanji'd" skit with Wiig was a good one.

That's a little different IMO. Everyone knew Farley and Spade were buddies, and you could tell that Farley was doing his best to try and get Spade to break.

There's a genuineness to instances like that which can't be faked. It's like the Biggus Dickus scene from Life of Brian (the actors playing the guards didn't know Michael Palin was going to get in their faces, they had been instructed only to "not laugh" at anything) or Havery Korman and Tim Conway on the Carol Burnette Show (Conway would often extemporize in order to try to get Korman to break character).

Pretty much like Sefan on Weekend Update. John Mulaney would rewrite the jokes for the live air broadcast just to try and get Bill Harder to crack. I don’t know about yall but I think there’s something funny about people trying to keep it together after breaking in a sketch. Have you ever tried to do that? It’s hard.

The wife and I were watching this because we were waiting for kids to leave our house post prom and there was nothing else on TV. The rest of the show was shockingly unfunny but this was hilarious.

I liked it when she turned around and saw him and cracked up. You could tell it was genuine.

Agreed. The show can still be funny with the right host.

I thought the whole episode was pretty decent.

But for this sketch, I wonder the behind-the-scenes, she did genuinely seem surprised when she turned around. I think they may have hidden the costumes from her in rehearsals and was honest reaction.

That host chick is smoke. Body is ridiculous.

I've always thought Heidi Gardner was weirdly hot.

I don't mind certain sketches when they break like the Disney World one, but this Beavis and Butt-Heard one wasn't nearly as funny as they made it appear. It was still cool though. I think she had no idea what to expect when she looked back. I assume they didn't show her what they would look like.

The dude playing butthead also makes a very butthead like face at her when she turned around.

I don’t think the skit was well written enough that it would’ve killed it. Honestly the highlight to me was the great costume/makeup job and her breaking just reflected that. Skit didn’t do the costumes justice and the cast members losing it actually kinda salvaged it to me.

Not a fan of breaking, but this was warranted and clearly she had not seen either of them before so the reaction was genuine.

ETA: apparently, she had seen then, which definitely detracts from the genuineness of her breaking and makes it seem Fallonesque.

Conway/Korman became a thing because each one was trying to get the other(s) to break (Burnett and Lawrence were either targets or collateral damage).

frick Jimmy Fallon.

Apparently she did know what was coming.

quote:

In an interview with Vulture, Gardner revealed that she had actually seen Gosling and Day in their full prosthetic look at the episode’s dress rehearsal earlier in the night. Many viewers assumed Gardner did not see their final looks until the live taping given how much she broke on air, but she actually did. Day’s exposed gums and teeth made her break both times.

Exactly. There was nothing remotely funny about it other than the makeup.

Saw this and thought it was great. It seemed like they didn’t let Heidi see what they were going to look like because when she saw Butthead, she completely lost it.

ETA: just read a couple posts up that she had seen them.

Great skit but Gardner seeing the costumes beforehand was a big miss on SNL’s part and weak of her to break again.
