Netflix just picked them up and I Enjoy watching these series so much. Really makes you appreciate what that generation went thru. Any other recommendations for similar movies or shows? Just trying to see if there are any I haven’t seen before

He’s actually the 1st lieutenant at that time and plays that type of asshat character very well.

I’m on E6 of my rewatch and still have a ways to go.

He’s not the drill sergeant. He’s the company commander. Stick with it and it will all make sense.

Masters of Air is coming at some point to Apple TV
Tom Hanks involved series in similar fashion
That's the one I'm waiting on

The book is excellent and should make for an excellent mini-series in the mold of BOB/Pacific. I'm really looking forward to it.

Casting David Schwimmer is about the only misstep in that series. Not that he did a bad job, it is just hard to not see Ross.

Having read the book before the series came out, I think Schwimmer played Sobel perfectly. His portrayal wasn't Ross-like at all.

He was not a drill sergeant... Maybe you should watch it before passing judgement.

Sobel (David Schwimmer) was an onion with many layers.

As I watched more and more, I learned to recognize that he helped build an extremely effective team, he helped them bond against a common enemy (himself) and he pushed them to the limits. Because of him they were able to survive the harsh winter.

I do find his story overall sad though. In 1970 he shot himself in the head but ended up only blinding himself. In 1987 he died due to malnutrition in an assisted living facility.

Despite how the show portrays him, he is a hero just the same as the rest.

I agree with this assessment. Some of those men survived what they faced because of how hard he was on them during training.

Do you think this was intentional or just a byproduct of his personality? I've never read any of the books only watched the series several times, and I've always wondered that.

Probably a little bit of both.

If he was like how he was portrayed I'd think he was extremely socially awkward and what we would call "on the spectrum".

I think he was directed by higher ups to whip these guys into shape. He probably took that as a personal challenge.

Not sure how excited you were to watch this since you waited 22 years. Schwimmer did a fantastic job with the roll.

I can't wait till you realize The Office Space guy, The New Kids on the Block guy, The Walking Dead guy, Magneto, Professor X, Tom Hanks son, etc etc etc all had parts in this series that has been beloved for over two decades.

Spoiler alert: The allies win.

It's also important to note, that while Sobel ended up serving in a gig that did not have him on the front line, he did make the jump on D-day just like the rest of the guys.

I don't care who you are, if you are willing to jump out of a plane in the midst of explosions to serve your country, you deserve the same recognition as the rest of the guys.

in my opinion, Sobel (real life Sobel) was a holdover from the pre-war Army who was never able to make the shift from the "proud legions" era Army (read the Proud Legions chapter from This Kind of War by Fehrenbach for context) to the "citizen soldier" era Army. he was probably a pretty competent pre-war garrison officer but he was utterly unprepared for the new style of leadership that was needed in field commanders during the war. it's an interesting case. he's a tragic character in my opinion.
