Well the thread was asking the board's thoughts on American Gangster, and your only post in the thread was this:

that's one great movie.

There is much more hyperbole in this statement, than the claim that this movie "sucks".

I can understand someone liking it as "a mindless popcorn flick", but to make the claim that it is "great" is pure silliness.

Sorry but I agree with Carson.

If a movie is going to.ask.me to.suspend disbelief then it better have a scroll at the beginning that says "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away."

At least then I know I'm in store for some far fetched ideas.

Armageddon asks me to believe that a group of roughness are the only guys capable of saving the world after only a few weeks of training. Soley because they can drill for oil in the gulf of Mexico.

Not to mention the advanced spaceships are basically Space shuttles with a couple extra rockets on them.

I'm pretty sure I had given my reasoning in a thread prior and didn't feel like reposting it

It's one of the most formulaic movies I've ever seen, even by Michael Bay standards. I can enjoy it for what it is, but it's not a good movie.

It is a good movie when viewed as a comedy.

Except when Bruce sacrifices himself - I mean, that's a useless tragedy in film if I've ever seen one. It did give me a teaching point with my girls, though.

"See what happened right there, girls? That was stupid. I promise you that in a similar situation - I'M coming back, not your stupid boyfriend. He sacrificed himself, essentially for nothing (Ben Affleck ). You can always get another boyfriend. You only have 1 father. Now - if he were your husband and the father of your children? Maybe I think a couple of seconds more, but I'm still coming back. I mean, you'll have insurance if that's the case - and, again, you'll be able to find another husband. You only have 1 father, and yours is awesome."

So, that's a positive thing I take away from this terrible film (and, again, props to the actors - some of the best acting in one of the worst films, ever - although Liv Tyler and Affleck just barely deserve the title "actor" at this point in their careers).

If that's your criteria, then I hope you've hated just about all action movies ever made (or just about any other genre, actually).

By the way, my arguments with Carson in this thread aren't specifically about Armageddon as much as it's just about his tastes in general, which he's entitled to like/hate whatever he wants. My thoughts on Armageddon is that it's a legit good movie, but that's within my own standards for liking movies "like this." Clearly I understand why people would think Armageddon is ridiculous and silly (and flat out stupid at times).

I guess my problem with movies like Armegedon is that they're close enough to reality that stupid people come out of the theater saying shite like "thank god we have technology like that in place just in case this shite every really does hit the fan."

It makes me want to ruin the movie for them on principle.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean I don't think it's a great movie, because I do.

So you really hate Armageddon because there are some idiots that believe that it is real?

Talk about misguided emotions..

I have heard this from no one, ever...if anyone actually believes this then they are too dumb to be helped...doesnt seem like a good reason to not enjoy a movie though

Just the Drill arm. They had to train to drive the armadillo.... And why would he need that on an oil rig.

My confusion stems from them climbing in the Armadillo and dismantling "unnecessary" shite like he knew what it was.

He could have designed it for terrestrial drilling rather than deep sea.

I always thought it was awesome how Chick freaks out because William Fitchner has a "gun in outer space," when there's a giant gatling gun mounted on the Armadillo.

Bingo. Nothing wrong with the former. When some of you legitimately think that Armageddon is objectively a well made, well written, well produced work of art is when it's appropriate to go full Carson.

Haha. Right? What was the point of that anyway, other than for "space dementia" Buscemi to fire it? Aliens? Didn't Affleck use it to get out of the other shuttle too?

Bullets wouldn't be the most efficient way to remove an object obstructing your path. Thing needed a dozer blade on the front or something.

Yeah, AJ used it to blast them out of the fallen shuttle. I think Buscemi was fricking around with the gun(s) after they had finished drilling.
