Great movie.

I've never taken the time to watch the Redux version, though.

I have seen each 6 or 7 times and I prefer Redux, solely due to the French Plantation scene. That "chapter" really centers the whole movie, injects political/historical reality into what is otherwise just existentialism, and gives it a message.

Where the Redux version goes wrong is the Playboy Bunny rain/helicopter scence. Boring, pointless, redundant - rightfully cut from the theatrical release - and Redux suffers from it.

Whereas the French Plantation scene is absolutely necessary and it's a real shame that it was originally cut, the rain/helicopter Bunny scene is 180 degrees the opposite and you can 100% see why it was dropped.

Every time this movie comes up here, I post the same thing.

You watch it when you are in your teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and it's a different movie every time you see it as you grow older.

When you are young, you identify with the young soldiers on the boat, then, as you grow up and start to get a little disillusioned with life, you start to identify with Sheen. Then you really start to identify with Sheen(The best line in the whole movie is the first one: "Saigon. shite!"). As you get even older and realize the futility of the rat race, you start to wonder what it would be like to just get the frick away from it all, and you start identifying with Kurtz, because frick everybody and everything.

But it's such a boring scene.

I get that it provides true depth to the Vietnam War and exposes a lot that was covered up by the protests. But when I watched Redux for the first time (without seeing the original version), I was damn near falling asleep trying to keep up with the plantation scene.

I saw something somewhere that said the entire opening scene was improved by Sheen and he was drunk while he did it.

I've always thought the movie wasn't really a war movie as much as it was a character study that happened to be set during a war. The theatrical cut almost seemed like 2 completely different movies, sorta like Full Metal Jacket. Apocalypse Now before the bridge scene and Apocalypse Now after the bridge scene. The beginning was about Sheen then it flipped to being about Brando.

I like the French Plantation scene for two reasons

1. It gives real overview of the whole war effort.
2. I think it foreshadows where Willard goes afte the movie and he leaves. She's thee only one who understands him. I bet he went back to her when he got out.

I think its the best "war movie" ever made. Some people think its slow or boring at times, I don't see that all. If you haven't read "Heart of Darkness" (I only did because I had to in school) you may not appreciate the movie as much.

I didn't see Apocalypse Now until after I read Heart of Darkness in school. I felt like reading and understanding book made the movie better.

So strange and surreal but visually amazing and always kept me interested in what would happen next and how it would end.

You have to appreciate the ambition and scope of the movie and the cinematography is beautiful.

I can see why people would think its one of the greatest movies ever made.
This.

Also, reading and analyzing "Heart of Darkness" is required prior to viewing.

What are your thoughts on the movie? Likes? Dislikes?

I love the first two acts, but as soon as Brando showed up I found myself asking "what the frick?".

I know that's odd because most people who enjoy the film always cite Brando's performance as one of the things they love most.

The whole movie is a tour DE force with incredible performances by everyone in the movie including 14 year old Lawrence fishburne as Mr. Clean. Sheen was incredible. The shot of him coming out the water after breathing through the reed was freaking iconic. The whole movie is just plain bad as and will never be topped for me. If you understand Joseph Conrad and heart of darkness it's even better and deeper once you understand the mythology

Probably my favorite cinematography scene is when they are playing Ride of the Valkyries as the Hueys are preparing to attack and take a village on the beach so they can surf and drop the boat.

Forgot to mention that my English teacher was a Vietnam vet who had been a combat situation where he lost several comrades. He didn't go into great detail, but it added another dynamic while we were watching it as an adaptation.
