I have watched every episode, but honestly I enjoy Neil DeGrasse Tyson's youtube lectures and debates much more.

Ah...then I can understand the criticism. I'd suggest pulling it up on Netflix and going through it. Some of it, obviously, is dated in that we've learned a tremendous amount since 1980...and the visuals are not that great. But if you enjoy science and great storytelling, it's worth a watch.

I've enjoyed the NDT version very much, though like other have said I enjoy many other science series/programs much more. I appreciate the fact that they really wanted to pay homage to Sagan's masterpiece in both style and tone, but I think they have done a disservice to Tyson by asking him to play it that way. If you're familiar with Tyson, he's very gregarious and nearly hyper. He has a wonderful connection to Sagan, and he is at this point one of America's most prominent science popularizers so he's a natural choice...but asking him to play it down in tone to try and match Sagan has not been the best choice I think. Had they wanted to get a host whose personality is closer to Sagan's, they should have opted for Brian Cox.

I like Neil in interviews but hate when he gets into his newscaster form on the show with the head nods and what have you. Just be yourself. To me, the show peaked at the Universal Calendar and nothing since was as interesting.

To me, it's just more of the same of what we see on so many other networks available to us today. Nothing special. The original Cosmos was fresh and new in its day, and Sagan's narrative kept you interested whereas Tyson's puts you to sleep, although that could be a result of the dull scripts. With that and my DVR memory at a premium, I've given up on it.

I've given up on it. The original Cosmos was Sagan delivering the script/book he'd written in his own voice. It worked and was brilliant because it was Sagan's thoughts about the world around Sagan.

This Cosmos is NDT reading someone else's words in a manner that is decidedly not what makes NDT usually such a fricking fantastic speaker and champion of science to the layperson and is unwatchable. I had such high hopes, but once I realized that NDT really didn't have much to do with the script and was just hired to read what was on the teleprompter I didn't feel so great about this series. Once I'd seen that the way the show was presented didn't even let NDT's usual personality and delivery come through, I pulled the eject lever and punched out.

This is what stupid people believe.

Yep.

And onto the series, I think he is spending a bit too much time on global warming and not the cosmos at large, but what he's saying are great points. I'm sorry that the world renowned climatologists on the Poliboard thread disagree with the basic fact that CO2 warms the atmosphere, that we're adding to it, and the fact that we've only been able to accurately record global temperatures accurately for the past 150 years and for some reason a Time Magazine article from the 70s with a polar bear on the cover is the smoking gun that this isn't happening.

I think it's important information that people need. People need to stop living in denial that it's happening, when the results to our planet could be devastating. We really need to get off of oil and coal and work our way to solar, wind, and nuclear energy (which I'm disappointed he didn't talk about in the last episode).

People need to start thinking in the long term, especially since we're going to likely be living much longer than our ancestors did. It's estimated that the first bicentennial person is living right now, and the first person to live a millennia will be born in less than 50 years. The longest amount of time most morons in this country think about is 4 years. Maybe we should start considering the alternatives in order to make sure our children live in a better environment than we did.

Global Warming is Baby Boomer mentality at its finest. It's basically "frick everything. We're not the generation who has sacrificed anything for it, and we're not going to be the generation who has to pay for it. So frick your taxes and short term payments since I'll be long dead when this would affect me."

I have faith we'll turn it around, since I look at our species as misguided and greedy, but typically well meaning and willing to come together when the situation calls for it.

I have to agree. Despite my global warming rant, I am disappointed with the series. I was hoping that it would make people want to go back out into space again, not really to save the planet from Global Warming (although a single episode I wouldn't have minded). This clearly isn't going to do that. It's mostly about saving the environment and clarifying that evolution is real. That's great, but I still expected a show named "Cosmos" to be at least 80% focused on the cosmos.

I love the show. Way too many commercials though. I DVR it and watch it later in the week. I'm glad he spent an entire show on global warming. It needed to be explained in a language that everyone should be able to understand. It's hard to understand those that are still in denial.

I frequently think about my grandparents that smoked cigarettes for years and never thought they could hurt you. Drank and drove and didn't think of the consequences. No seat belts, no child restraints, no helmets for kids on bikes. We humans have to be told over and over the most obvious things until we get it.

you realize a millennium is 1000 years, right? Science and medicine are improving, sure; but not to that point.
Hell, even if we get to the point of preventing/reversing tissue degradation, I'd think shear boredom would create a cap well before a thousand years. You'd pull your own plug...

Who knows. If they figure out how to stop tissue degradation, then it's possible. Granted, even then, the odds are still heavily against you, since it's only a matter of time before you get into a ridiculous accident that instantly kills you.

No way in hell I would want to live 1000 years. Give me my 80 and let me die.

i couldn't make it through episode 2. the episodes are not structured well and NDGT isn't a good host

also, as observing as my roommate watches, they do focus on AGW too much. this is a multi-episode show on the universe...it shouldn't be dominated by any one subject like that, regardless of your faith in the science behind it

It wasn't really as far-reaching into the "cosmos" as I hoped the show might be...it seems to focus mostly on the history of our earth and the people who have shaped the voyage of how we got to where we are today in our understanding of various sciences. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just not quite the scope of what I hoped it would be.
