Just don't expect great writing. Puzo is a good storyteller but a mediocre wordsmith at best.

Nah, that's not it. But good job, good effort.

Well, then it comes down to a matter of taste, and as the Roman said, de gustibus non est disputandum. You're in lonely company, though. Which doesn't make you wrong, just makes it more complicated for you to argue that you're right.

You got me curious. How does the book wrap up that story differently?

Since we are talking about the movie, and this isn't part of the movie, I'll throw the spoiler out there.
Don't remember details but gist of it is that Fabrizzo (the bodyguard that planted the bomb that was meant for Michael and kills Apollonia) was sponsored by the Barzinis who smuggle him out of Sicily to America. Years later, someone rats on him - he is running a pizza parlor in Buffalo under a new name, if memory serves and Michael has Al Neri kill him with a car bomb. More to it than that, but its been years since I read the book.

Exactly right. I should have put it in terms of taste from the start.

I think there was a scene, but it was edited out.

You won't regret it. Great read and well worth it.

I like it, except the storyline with Sonny's mistress.

I still take the book over the movie, though. One of the few times I can say that.

it's in the epic cut, where 1 & 2 are combined and played in chronological order.

Greatest movie of all time.

It is a good book. I actually read it for an 8th grade project where the teacher told us to pick any book and do a report on it. I still can't believe that teacher gave me approval to read the Godfather.

Finally, So do people think Duvall was really good in this?

Yeah, man...he was incredible. Everyone in that movie was incredible.

PS, I often wondered why Michael got married in Sicily myself. Wasn't he still married in the States? Maybe he thought he would never return to the States...I'm not totally sure as I've only really watched it a couple times myself.

Appolonia was his first wife. He got married because he was hit by the thunderbolt, and he didn't have much else to do besides hiking around with his swarthy bodyguards.

Also, I could have done without Michael getting married in Siciliy, although that girl was purty.

That was necessary to mark the completion of Michael's transformation into the cold, calculating, ruthless don. After she is assassinated Michael will stop at nothing to protect this family.

Also, it gives a cool what if scenario that I used to talk to my dad about when I first saw the movies with him when I was younger. If he had the traditional Sicilian wife how would that have affected his character and story going forward, although I'm hesitant to go into this too much because it will be pretty big spoiler territory if you haven't seen part 2 yet.

He didn't marry Kay until he returned to the US after Appollonia was killed. Kay was just his serious girlfriend.

Wow, 14 downvotes for my OP. I can tell this is not the nurturing, comfortable environment I hoped it would be for my unconventional thoughts on this classic movie. I will retreat.

Lol I don't get why this is one of your main points. Yes he was good. I personally loved James Caan, I thought he was a scene stealer

Caan was fantastic, and he was the perfect actor to portray Sonny as the bombastic hotheaded bully of an older brother.

I was picturing him as Sonny at the toll booth.

He was good enough to make audiences forget that he didn't resemble anyone in his family. His siblings all looked like each other... not Sonny.
