I just watched it for the first time last night (and I'm damn year 40).

Of course I really enjoyed it. A couple thoughts:

That movie made me nostalgic for shite I never knew and am not sure was ever real.

The whole "leave the gun, take the canolis" line -- I was led to believe that that would be a significant moment or maybe a funny moment to remember. I thought it was meh. Do I just not get it?

Also, I could have done without Michael getting married in Siciliy, although that girl was purty.

Finally, So do people think Duvall was really good in this?

But like I said, I really enjoyed it and plan to watch it again soon.

There were a number of things going on with that - it's my wife's favorite scene from the film (and she's never watched it from beginning to end.) It was an ad-lib.

And it shows the casual attitude that gangsters have about violence, particularly murder. And this was one of their own - they suspected him of selling out the Don. Regardless, he let him down, so he had to go - if nothing else, as an example.

And - "take the cannoli" just sums up what they thought of him after he was dead (ETA: and how murder is just part of the job.)

It's a small, throw-away line that people have fixed on. It wasn't meant to be a meme or a laugh out loud moment. The movie existed for three decades before NPR and the internet made the phrase into a thing.

Yes, as was pretty much everyone else.

Thank you for the validation.

I love the scenes where Clemenza drops science. Very underrated character from my exposure to the movie through popular culture.

Also never heard but loved the quote about never being a real man if you don't spend time with your family. Very clutch line.

I didn't think his performance was very special but I watched just about everybody else thinking how good they were.

Even the mortician.

Horse shite.

I was 5 when Godfather was released and I've been hearing about that line as long as I can remember. That line was a "thing" when the movie came out. I've known that line virtually my whole life, and I didn't see the movie until I was about 25.

But it's a great line.

Maybe that's because everyone is so good that no one has a chance to truly stand out. Maybe it's because he's one of the few non-Italian characters and that becomes a mark against him (in the story and in appearance on screen). I don't think he was absolute magic and head and shoulders above the rest, but he definitely held his own in a movie full great performances.

He also warned Paulie to "watch out for the kids" when he was backing out of the driveway. Clemenza cared about the chillins.

Always.

Sad.

Really?

Who do Sicilians marry? Other Sicilians. He was "awe-struck" love at first sight.

Who wouldn't? He was terrific as was every other actor and the entire production is considered one of the best ever cinematically.

The more you watch it, the better it gets. It is story telling and movie brilliance.

I'll dip my toe into this conversation...

I favor the sequel over the original. I also think it is the best sequel of all time.

I might agree with this based purely on the fact that we get two stories in one with the flashbacks. But then I think about the first one and it feels wrong to pick one over the other.

That's a good way of putting it. Part 2 was so damn good but then you feel bad for thinking it could be better than the first, it's like family

ETA: Oh and to the OP

Really? Ace explained the cannolis line perfectly. Light humor with a touch of murder also meant to emphasize how little killing someone who deserved it meant.

The death of Apollonia was a chapter in Michael's life that pushed him further to being ruthless. Think of how he started, then to the killing that led him to Sicily was a huge jump. But to become Don these types of things needed to happen in his life.

Duval was awesome. What did you not see that everyone else did?

Happy for you. Nice that your family was quoting the movie your entire life but I didn't hear it used in popular culture until Sarah Vowell published her "Take the Cannoli" book in 2000. Sitcoms and sketch shows used the "Offer he can't refuse" and "sleeps with the fishes" as well as the horse's head gag.

All this is reinforced later when Clamenza is cooking for the guys. Sonny comes in and asked about the guy and Clamenza casually says "oh you wont see him no more" then procedes to pick on Michael about Kate.

Lol I don't get why this is one of your main points. Yes he was good. I personally loved James Caan, I thought he was a scene stealer

The Godfather is an amazing movie but it's sequel is the greatest film ever made.
