Just finished watching this. I'd grade it very highly even though the first half of the movie kind of has a campy/cheesy feel to it. However, the last half is such a masterpiece that it really makes the early shortcomings insignificant.

Garland is a genius. The bear scene and the ending choreography and score are mind blowing. Easily 9/10 for me.

Unfortunately it's a sci-fi movie that makes you think, so naturally the studio refused to distribute it.

it was a fight to get the movie on screens, the studio wanted to dump it on Netflix. hence the relative lack of hype compared to Ex Machina.

i personally liked Annihilation more, and def think it would have had a broader appeal than Ex Machina, which i also liked.

It was a direct to Netflix movie in the rest of the world. Studio had no faith in it. fricking shame because it's very good.

My only real complaint was Jennifer Jason Leigh's acting was some of the most wooden and bland I've ever seen. I get that she's a broken character with nothing to live for but goddamn was she monotone. Worse than Tom Yates in House of Cards.

Whatever award is given to audio engineers and the sound producers should go to these guys because the sound effects and music at the end of the movie were just incredible.

I love the absolute hypocrisy behind this, because Hollywood is constantly complaining about diversity in films and how women can’t get leads especially in STEM fields. I don’t want to hear from them again when they refuse to promote a film that gloriously meets all of this.

But instead I’m a sexist for hating Ghostbusters, despite the fact it’s entirely loathsome, not funny, and a conscious “frick you” to the fanbase. Seriously, has there ever been a more petty pathetic villain than a YouTube commentator? Worst villain of all time as far as I’m concerned.

I've seen Arrival. It's good.

You're just wrong here.

IMO, Annihilation was much better. Arrival was pretty good, but just very slow and drawn out with little pay off in the end.

Annihilation had a little lull in the middle, but I never lost interest and then the end was just phenomenal theater.

You would absolutely hate the book. None of those people in the movie were even even close to as bland and emotionless as they were in the source material.

Arrival was the Lifetime movie version of Annihilation.

They're not even close to the same movie. Why are we comparing them?

Haven't seen it, I wanted to but I've been busy.

Yeah, studios want formulas that are known to sell. If you can't pigeonhole it into a "it's like this movie", then they get antsy.

Ironically, the reboots and big series get the most freedom because they have name recognition on their side. Guarantee that if you took TLJ's plot and removed it from the Star Wars label, you likely don't even get the budget to make it for SyFy Channel. Same with the Ghostbusters reboot.

Said it opened late February with a 40 mill budget but had only earned 32 mill as of April. Based on the reviews here, I’ll redbox it.
