British guy reviewing it has an obvious case of rustled jimmies. Of course a Brit is going to have issues with an American propaganda film.

This. Complete abomination. Emmerich is the shiittiest director of our time
You're not wrong. Independence Day is the only one of his movies that I can rewatch any time it's on. Most of them are incomprehensible and bad.
But the Patriot has its moments for me. The creek scene is fricking awesome. And the final battle between Mel and the cavalry dude is one of the most satisfying deaths you'll ever seen onscreen. I'm not watching The Patriot for a history lesson.

Amazing
No...no it was not you filthy liar.
I was bored at lunch and watched most of that, and it was pretty awful.

I might enjoy this movie if someone else was in it, but all I can think of is how batshit Mel Gibson is IRL.

Why? Its one of the worst movies ever. It is unbelievably terrible
No, it's not. And it was successful when it was released for the simple fact that people liked it.

It is like Bad Boys II. Is it a well made movie? Probably not, but I don't feel like I waste my time when I sit down and watch it.

Not really. It's pretty basic, actually.
His review of Kingdom of Heaven is better.

Wait - two fingers up the booty hole, with a third to confirm their accuracy, is not the proper way to take a temperature?

I liked the Patriot when I was a kid when it first came out, but it's basically unwatchable to me now.

The Patriot is a god damn American treasure. Screw those limey fricks.

I will never understand the hatred for The Patriot. My only guess is that some people really like sounding smart by picking apart historically inaccurate movies. The same types of people like to shite on movies like Braveheart and Gladiator.

Nice try. I love braveheart. On the other hand, the Patriot is so overwrought it's unintentionally hilarious.
Braveheart is a historical epic that happens to take a few dramatic liberties.
The Patriot is a crappy action movie masquerading as a historical epic and crammed full of every cliche imaginable. Every death is transparently exploitative. The acting is cartoonishly over the top, the dialogue is terrible, and it fails miserably in trying to address difficult historical issues. Example: How do we handle the whole issues of slavery? Easy, have a token black guy make an appearance at the end and utter laughable dialogue (something about 'I reckon' from what i recall). Problem solved!

If you found The Patriot overwrought, you must have a lot of trouble following the majority of movies you see

I had a really douchey History professor at LSU who bashed The Patriot...Thompson maybe? Dropped the class immediately

A few?!?!
The only accurate aspect of Braveheart is that some of the characters actually existed in the general time period discussed and the Scottish fought the English.
Literally everything else is made up.

If you went into the Patriot thinking it was going to be a critique of early ___ then I don't know what to tell you.
Obviously they wanted Mel's character to look like a good guy (a white Southern plantation owner with free black workers? There is literally no historical precedent for that), but that's not what the movie is about. It is about the colonists fighting for their own freedom from what they saw was oppression.
Hell, it didn't come close to showing the horrors of slavery but it didn't just ignore the problem cold turkey.
FYI the real Founding Fathers struggled mightily with the obvious contradiction of fighting for freedom while simultaneously possessing slaves, I don't think it's an issue that can properly addressed in a movie that is so obviously about the war itself.
eta: I guess people can get mad because it does kind of portray itself to be more historically accurate than it really was. Same goes for Braveheart, and hell same goes for Remember the Titans. But I enjoy all 3 movies because they're good stories. Even if some of it is fictionalized I think fighting for freedom or playing together in the face of adversity is a great story. So what if the names or places or events aren't 100% accurate?
