Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of Power Rangers is only six weeks away from hitting theaters, however, it turns out there’s another version of the teenagers with attitude already in the works. Back in 2015, Adi Shankar delivered Power/Rangers, an unauthorized bootleg version of the Rangers starring James Van Der Beek and Katie Sackhoff.

Shankar was recently announced as the showrunner for Netflix’s Castlevania series but in an interview with Polygon, Shankar revealed he’s also developing an animated reboot of the original Fox Kids series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers that he describes as Power Rangers meets Dragon Ball Z.

“It’s a complete retelling of the first three seasons. And it’s going to be really fricking dark. Darker than any other Power Rangers series.” Shankar told Polygon.

Shankar is working on the script for the first season with hopes to launch in about eighteen months. Several networks are interested in picking up the series however, Shankar said he hopes to sell the series to Netflix:

“Netflix is doing what every other network should be doing. I’ve worked with almost every network and Netflix just gets it. The world we live in now has disrupted the idea of what entertainment is and Netflix gets it.”

Interesting.

It worries me that Shankar keeps saying things like "it's really fricking dark" and "it's fricking violent as hell" when he is talking about the two cartoons he is working on.... It kind of reminds me of how Zack Snyder thinks "dark and gritty" makes everything awesome regardless of if that tone actually fits.

I use shite like this as a measuring stick for stupidity. Entertainment like this is for passive-aggressive losers who equate nuance and depth with dark, griddy violence. They're pandering to the worst type of audience with this trite shite.

I'm not encouraged either.......

But I'll say, that "fan" vid made a few years back was pretty fricking good. Power/Rangers

ETA: And this is the same guy. I'll give it a chance.....

Just give us a goddamn live action Dragon Ball Z series true to script and Manga with a solid production value.

What is so fricking hard about that?

Did anyone see the power rangers thing he put out 2 years ago that this talks about?

It's really good.

One word of caution though: he wasn't the writer.
Or the director of it.

Just the producer. So he might just be cashing in on the films popularity.

I thought it was great. I was excited about this until I heard it was going to be animated. It could still be cool, I was just excited to see something like that short turned into a series.

Shankar has produced some great stuff. He has a great Punisher short. Dredd was greatness. I hope one day to see a sequel to it. I hope the people involved with the Power Ranger short are somehow involved in this series.

I don't mind a more mature version of the show but this just doesn't seem like a good idea to me

Is he 14 years old?

Snyder should never work again.

Saban would never allow an R rated show. BTW, nothing in that synopsis says it will be rated R just dark.
