Heath Ledger deserves a mention. I mean he was great as the Joker, and passable as a gay cowboy.

Barry Pepper, John Heder, Sasha Baron Cohen, and Keaunu Reeves should get mentions

berry was seriously great in her latest movie the call.

not exactly a big time movie.. but I thought she gave a tremendous suspenseful performance.

Kevin fricking Kostner. Probably Bull Durham.

And there can be disagreement about which one movie he was great in, but not that there was more than one.

Tom Hulce from Amadeus

Maybe the problem is he wasn't acting and he acts like that IRL so nobody wants to work with him. Man, that character grated, which he was supposed to do.

and Bubba from Forrest Gump
Of course he may be famous for something else and I don't recognize him without the lip prosthetic.

Eric Bana?

I just can't think of a truly great performance to qualify him for the list.

Was Tim Allen better than average in anything outside of the first Santa Clause?

bullshite. Bull Durham is probably his greatest, but he was more than good in Field of Dreams. I enjoyed the performance in Dances with Wolves.

Despite the lack of accent, he was passible in Robin Hood too.

See, this is why the OP doesn't work. Most of the names that have been named are actors with one iconic role, and lesser roles. Its really hard to find an actor that has had one great role with the others shitty.

If Rob Schneider wins an Oscar next year, we can do this thread again.

Don't hate on him for having a stellar performance in the highest profile movie ever. His portrayal of Skip Engblom in Lords of Dogtown was amazing. It was one of those performances where you have to ask who that actor was, and then you can't believe how they disappeared into the character.

And yeah, he was money in Brokeback Mountain. One of the best subdued performances you'll see.

Also, Cuba was good in Boyz in the Hood and Jamie Foxx in Collateral was money.

Yeah, I don't get the Cuba hate - sure, he phones in the occasional role - but who doesn't?

Ditto for Bana - sure he was terrible in that g-dawful 2009 JJ Abrams so-called "Star Trek" film, but he was great in Blackhawk Down.

Foxx sort of in between - he caught lightning in a bottle for Ray - that's what he'll be remembered for, but he was very impressive in Collateral.

How bout this one. Tarantino himself. I always thought he was great in From Dusk till Dawn but in general is clearly not a good actor. He was perfect in that role.

Jim carrey - man on the moon

I think he did a good - not great-job, so much better than anything else he's done.

Really?

I thought Carrey was excellent in the Truman Show.

I thought about that one, and it was ok. But at times, it seemed as if I was watching Kaufman.
