I despised 2001: A Space Oddysey when I saw it at 20.......at 28, thought it was a masterpiece

Tree of Life

I might not have hated it on second though, but I thoroughly disliked it.

Now, one of my favorite films.

Out of Africa. Bored out of my mind at the theater when it was playing, head bobbing- fighting going to sleep and all that jazz. Watched it five years later and it was magical and enduring. Strong human sentiments expressed and lives lived they should be. Glorious. In my top 5 of all time.

Blade Runner. As a youth expecting Han Solo and it was nothing like Star Wars.

Didn't like the graduate at age 14 or 45. Maybe I'll finally get it.

I fell asleep the first three times I tried to watch Shutter Island. Fourth time I actually finished it and thought it was a good movie.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Once I understood it as a Chinese version of a superhero movie, I began to really like it, even love it.

All of the Spaghetti Westerns. I hated westerns in general as a kid, especially s.w.'s but I love them now.

Zero Dark Thirty. First time I saw it... I don't know, just wasn't feeling it. Now it's one of my favorites.

Donnie Darko... Just wasn't all that impressed the first time I saw it... Watched the Director's Cut a couple years later and really paid close attention ... Fantastic film.

I didn't despise it, but the first time I saw 2001 it was just way over my head. I was only like 17, but I didn't get it nonetheless. Watched it again when I was like 24 and it blew my mind lol

I think a lot of Kubric's movies are like that. Like you, I was not intellectually prepared for 2001 when I first saw it in high school. Tried it again one night right after college and really "got it." Well, as much as it can be gotten.

Traffic. Thought it was boring when it first came out. Saw it a few months later, really enjoyed it.

Apocalypse Now.

It's a different movie every 5-8 years. Depending on your first viewing (say as a draftable teen), you view it first as one of the soldiers on the boat, then you view it as Martin Sheen's character, since you are a little older. Later, you may view it from Kurtz's perspective--a cynical old sonofabitch who's just a little bit touched in the head by all he's seen and experienced.

I first watched it when I was about 15 or so, maybe younger, and it was WAAAAYYYYYY the frick over my head.

Zoolander and Anchorman. When they first came out and I watched them I just didn't get it. Then I watched them a second and third time they just got funnier and funnier

Napoleon Dynamite. The first time I watched, I was like "what did I just watch?" Totally didn't get the hype.

Then I watched again. And again. And again. It's one of the funniest movies ever. I can't believe I disliked it the first time.
