It's a guilty pleasure. The camp. The terrible action sequences. The actors they were able to get as guest stars is staggering for such a show.

And, my favorite anecdote, of course, concerns the crossover with The Green Hornet. In an early draft of the script (Batman was the "superior" show, money, prestige wise, etc.) it has the principals (all good guys) fighting with each other for some reason, and Robin knocks out Kato. The Green Hornet writers all laughed out loud (thinking it was a joke) - as Kato was played by relatively unknown in the U.S. martial arts superstar Bruce Lee. Anyone remotely familiar with the shows would know that Kato would leave a grease stain where Batman and Robin were standing a few seconds ago.

Well, the compromise was that they would fight to a draw.

The pop culture and political references in the show that kids had no clue about but the adults did is what made this show a huge hit.

Maybe Lee was the catalyst. Regardless, he did a great job of trolling Ward - they knew each other and even lived in the same condo at one point (before the crossover). Apparently Lee played it up all angry, like he was going to kick Robin's arse for real - and when the day of shooting came, let him in on the joke.

West and Ward are pretty strange guys in real life - part of the reason why the showed worked as well as it did.

"I suppose you’re only familiar with the new Batman movies. Michelle Pfeiffer? Ha! The only true Catwoman is Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, or Eartha Kitt. And I didn’t need molded plastic to improve my physique. Pure. West. And why doesn’t Batman dance anymore? Remember the Batusi?"

I watched the first batman movie the other day and thought it was so campy. I actually enjoyed it.

I've always enjoyed watching those old Batman shows. Fun stuff and a great intro to the character for a kid.

Of course these days I like the darker and arguably more realistic interpretations of Batman, but old school is a lot of fun!
