50 years ago today (09/13/1963), Gen. Jack D. Ripper gave orders for Wing Attack Plan R to the 843rd Bomb Group, causing Maj. Kong to set a primary target for the ICBM Complex at Laputa (which could not be reached due to fuel loss), and triggering the Doomsday Device in Soviet Russia.

Correct. Today is not the 50 year anniversary of the release of the movie, but of the actual day in the movie that the events take place. It can be seen on a page in the code book inside the B-52 that Lt. Goldberg is reading.

I am guessing that Merkwürdigliebe is just a Kraut name to you then.

If you are any bit of a film buff then you should know what this movie is. If you don't know then it would be good for you to do a bit of googling about it.

Probably my favorite part of this movie is when they realize that the message didn't get to that last plane. They ask Scott's character what the odds are that the plane gets in through the defenses. He then goes on this emotionally charged tirade bragging about the prowess of American pilots. Then he realizes the consequences of what exactly that means. The end of the world. The moment of realization on Scott's face was just perfect.

To me this part shows the central message of the movie perfectly in a nutshell. There we, as a nation, were in the middle of an absurd competition. Patriotism and pride were major motivating factors, and indeed it seems like there was pride in beating the Ruskies in the arms race. But then we needed to realize what the consequences of our actions truly were. What were we competing for that commanded such pride?

Fella could have a pretty nice weekend in Vegas with this stuff.

it came out in 1964 and the line was originally Dallas but they dubbed it due to JFK.
