And the whole 'lying' thing as something that totally throws off the aliens. Lying, deception, whatever you want to call it can be found through out all of nature. It's not a specific Human trait, not even close. I guess that's one of my main flaws regarding the basic premise of the story.

The Trisolarans communicate telepathically. You can’t lie if someone can read your mind.

The books do a great job explaining this, it’s much harder in a condense tv series… but the short answer, from my memory, is quantum entanglement. I also would’ve much preferred if they’d committed more time to explaining these concepts in the series rather than just brushing them aside as alien tech outside of our understanding

The books are really great if you enjoyed the series. The audio books are all well done with good character voices for folks who enjoy audio over actual reading… I highly recommend the entire Remembrance of Earth’s Past series for anyone who’s enjoying the world built in the Netflix series. Truly top notch sci fi

Even if that's true, they still live on a planet that has an ecosystem. And that'll certainly have plants and animals, which they can observe. Even if they can't read THEIR minds, they still either see or have records of various life forms.

Animals and plants 'pretend' to be other species, to ward off predators. Or hide from them. Baboons and ravens will "cooperate" with top predators (lions, wolves) in a game of 'Nope, no predators here!' that's freaking crazy to imagine.

Momma birds will fake having a hurt wing, to lure predators away from finding the nest.

I get it, as super intelligent beings, it's fun to construct some scenario where they'd communicate with us and all is well, but once they find out we "lie", not even to them, that's all it takes for them to declare war on all humanity.

*No idea why the DVs, but maybe y'all don't understand nature or don't like it when the tiniest of holes are poked at your make-believe stories, but that's just how I see it. It's not a dismissal of this story in particular, or the series, which I really do enjoy. We get fascinating sciency stuff regarding space travel, quantum entanglements, radio astronomy, but then to just gloss over other areas just to make the story happen.

You can’t deal with this because you’re looking at it from a human perspective and nature as we know it. The rest of the universe is a whole other ballgame. We have no clue.

Someone explained it to you already. They communicate telepathically and are incapable of lying to each other. It’s not crazy to suggest that a species who evolved in this way might be surprised to find out that another sapient species routinely tells outright falsehoods.

You’re arguing about it using animals that are incapable of speech (and also happened to evolve in the same ecosystem as us) as evidence, and it’s just.. kind of silly given the context.

Just started this a couple nights ago., and I’ll preface this by saying I have zero knowledge of the books, and how closely it does/doesn’t follow them, but I’ve really been enjoying it so far. About half way through. However it does strike me as being one of those series that has the potential to go off the rails, but so far I’m digging it. It’s also a lot more graphic than I expected it to be.

Benedict Wong is great. His character is easily my favorite.

I like it as well. Was hoping for more of a conclusion in the end.

Only thing that puzzled me was the aliens seemed all powerful one moment and very limited the next. Felt it lacked consistency in that regard.

The explanation about how they were so advanced but that they were afraid humanity would advance further than them in just 400 years felt a bit flimsy to me. And confusing at times.

Finished it yesterday. Very underwhelmed. I have not read the books. IF I had perhaps I would feel differently about it.

Right. I guess we have to ignore certain things. Like why did they even tell the humans about their plan? Just get there in 400 years and wipe them out. Now earth is preparing for a war that they never knew was coming. Just mess with human’s science for a few centuries.

I guess because they can't lie? And the Chinese lady that made contact initially threw humanity under the bus.

ETA - I see her point and understand why she did what she did. Especially considering her circumstances in China.

They really did a good job with the characters I thought. I found it pretty easy to relate to them, even though they were all extremely intelligent in their own fields. I hope they get a few more seasons out of it.

But they didn’t have to “not lie”. They created a helmet specifically to bring them into the game and explain what their intent was. All they had to do was do nothing at all. Nobody was asking them at that point.

Only a few people even knew that aliens existed at that point. And even fewer had an idea of the intent. If the aliens just went silent, how many people would even be thinking about them in 400 years when they arrived?

Especially if they just messed with the science for centuries.

Yeah that I don't know.

I guess they assume the Chinese lady sounded the alarm since the pacifist being told her what would happen. And when they talk about their thoughts it seems like they are working from some sort of a hive mind, so they're maybe assuming all earth knows as well?

First let me say i enjoyed the first season overall.
Two things I don’t think I understand.
1. The nano-fiber sail ship. It needed a thousand nuclear detonations to reach 1% light speed correct? How would they have placed let’s say the last 200 or so warheads so far out so quick? At that point where the sail ship would be and how fast it was moving would have taken normal propulsion well over a decade to get there to put the warheads in place. Didn’t make sense to me.

Second. I don’t think I understand the headset VR “games”. At first I thought it was the aliens tasking the humans to solve a problem they couldn’t inside a game scenario. Are the just for communication or do they have a larger purpose i’m just not seeing.
So the wallfacer stuff. They have to come up individually with a way to fight the aliens but never talk about or act on it until it’s time to put it in action? How does that work? What if something needs to be constructed? Someone explain this to me.

As others have said Auggie is fine as hell but a shitty actress and Woo is the best character. Shout out to Big Head having a part in the show.

Also the name of the show. Is that just a reference to 3 Suns in the system the aliens reside in?

I thought the number was 30. But yes, even just getting those 30 magically in place that quickly and precisely requires quite a stretch of the imagination.

They give the orders on what to build but don't have to explain how to use it or what it does or anything else. It's not exactly practical, but it serves the point of finding ways to deal with every word being recorded by the SanTi.

Maybe I'm missing something but the whole "lying" thing seemed like a plothole to me. They have these complex interdimensional sophons that were sent across the universe on an advance scouting mission that allow them to monitor, register, see and hear all human activity and even communicate with select humans in real time. Yet somehow they don't realize dishonesty exists in our society until their buddy reads them Little Red Riding Hood? They would have figured out what we are like on day 1 of the sophon arrival and all of the other games and what not would have been moot.
