C'mon folks, think about it! Without this classic film and soundtrack, the chickens in South Carolina would not have any music to run out to before football games, and they's just sit in the locker room wondering what to do!

WTF? So I just watched this movie for the first time because it's on every "100 Greatest Movies of All Time" list that you can find on the internet. So what exactly was so great about this movie at the time? I mean what hell just happened during the last two plus hours of my life? I'm sure there is all this symbolism blah blah blah, but seriously, wtf?

I agree 100%. The monkey scene and HAL scene were really good but would have been just as good as 2 movie shorts IMO.

Were you smoking pot while watching the movie? It helps FWIW.

My aunt took me to see this in the theatre when it first came out. Talk about something that was WAY over an 8 year old's head.
What's interesting in watching it now is comparing what 1968 folks thought that the year 2001 would be like, then remembering how it really was. Back then, we thought that we'd be doing all these grandiose things in outer space, yet we still haven't sent a manned mission back to the moon for nearly 4 decades.
Also, if you haven't seen 2010 yet, don't waste your time.

If you read the companion book, 2001 makes perfect sense. The book/movie is about aliens helping man along in key points of our evolution.
Kubrick left so much up for interpretation, you had people wondering if the black obelisk was sent by aliens or God or whatever. You shouldn't have to read the book to enjoy a movie, but this was Kubrick's choice.
2010 was a good movie, but unfortunately they turned it into a cold war drama. The book was less political, except for a space race with the Chinese.

Here's 1 interpretation.... LINK

Hell, that interpretation takes longer than the movie.

But, does it make sense?

I don't know about the interpretation but the book makes sense.
BTW, I like 2010 the movie and book. You had to know it wasn't going to a Kubrick vision but it's a good movie. I like Roy Schieder.

It's the best for a quick interpretation if you have no idea where to begin thinking about the movie (i.e you haven't read the books)

You are just not evolved mentally enough to understand the significance and depth of meaning behind masterpieces like 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. So deep that even the deep thinkers don't have a clue what they are about.
thats sad when the best part of the movie was a bunch of dudes in monkey suits beating each other. Kubrick was fried most of the time on drugs thats why most of his movies you walk out going

Nope. Maybe that's where I went wrong.

I agree that it was kind of hard to follow the first time I watched it. However, you have to remember that when this movie was made (1969, I think??), the computers that were shown on the ship, etc didn't exist at all. Kubrick envisioned all of this. He and Clarke were geniuses.

In 1968 the only computers in general use were Univacs and IBM units the size of a Volkswagon Beetle. Punchcards were king and graphical user interfaces were in the experimental phase.
HAL's artificial intelligence is still pretty much fantasy, but his being used as an all purpose computer to complete any task needed is what we now have in our PC's. Clarke knew his shite when it came to communications and foresaw the totally linked world that we live in.
His sequels to 2010 went into humans downloading info directly to our brains, so we have that to look forward to.
