WTF? So I just watched this movie for the first time because it's on every "100 Greatest Movies of All Time" list that you can find on the internet. So what exactly was so great about this movie at the time? I mean what hell just happened during the last two plus hours of my life? I'm sure there is all this symbolism blah blah blah, but seriously, wtf?

I'm kinda new here, but isn't there a board for this?

I'm looking for an OT opinion on this movie, and yeah on second thought I could have posted it there but what the hell

I feel like I just watched grass grow in slow motion for the last two hours. The first time I tried to watch this movie , I fell asleep before they even landed on the moon.

You are just not evolved mentally enough to understand the significance and depth of meaning behind masterpieces like 2001 and A Clockwork Orange. So deep that even the deep thinkers don't have a clue what they are about.

I also thought it was a complete waste of time. I guess when it came out it was revolutionary or something. The book was not very conducive to a very entertaining movie experience.

the black stone is god
HAL was the first terminator
2010 is garbage
that is all you need to know, and that this thread should have probably been in the movie/tv board

I loved a clockwork orange, but I'll probably never watch 2001 again. While it may be deep, it's just not interesting enough to hang around 2 hours waiting for anything at all to happen.

The movie board closes down by 12am on most nights, so he at least knew he could get opinions over here.
I liked it, but I could understand anyone saying WTF.
You also have to put it in context with the time frame when it came out. At the time the effects were great.
It is nice to see a thinking man's sci-fi now and then.
Once again I can understand people hating it and falling asleep.

The movie is similar to 1984 except that instead of the government controlling all thoughts and actions its the computers.
Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave, I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave Bowman: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL?
HAL: I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: Dave, although you took thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move

When there was actually stuff going on to think about it was ok, but when it takes 20 minutes to get the pod out to work on the ship, that's a little too much.

And I did understand all the symbolism and etc etc. I just got incredibly bored when nothing happened for hours at a time during this movie.

How was this movie received when it was released due to evolution being one of the major themes of the movie? I mean it was 1968.

I know, nothing blows up and there's no nudity but try and sit-back and enjoy THE sci-fi movie that all other sci-fi movies rip off.
The effects from 2001 have been used the last 30 years in EVERY sc-fi movie.
The movie and books are bad arse.
