Well I didn't read the book so I don't care about all that.
I think the show was kind of average, but I'm definitely interested in seeing where this goes. Franco's not really that great an actor, but he's doing the best he can and he's somewhat believable. All of the "You shouldn't be here"'s are interesting, too.
I'm in...for now.

Watched Ep. 1 last night.
I thought it was ok. I wasn't blown away, but I will of course keep watching.
Disclaimer: I read the book.

didn't he go back for other reasons as a "trial run" first?
the entire time I was saying that this is what I would do. Get the few do's and don'ts down. like dont bet that much at the bookie and dumb shite like that. spend a couple days or weeks in this world then come back 2 mins later regroup and actually know what you are going to do

In the book he goes back several times. They skipped over most of this in the episode last night, specifically the bookie stuff. He makes multiple bets in the book (the first being the world series) before placing the boxing bet and getting beaten down by the bookie.
They've altered the timelime a few times already in the show, he doesn't go to Dallas before going to Kentucky, Kentucky and Harry is his trial run in the book, Al doesn't commit suicide until after he returns from altering the Harry siblings murder (Harry's ultimate fate).
I'm sure they are doing this for time constraints, but the plot in the book was near perfect, not sure why they are skipping/altering the timelines unless they are going to time jump the entire plot before the end and showing them all out of sequence (with knowing Abrams, this could be it)

Well I didn't read the book
You should seriously consider reading the book. One of my all time favorite reads by Stephen King. The book was just amazing. It's a long book...but one of those reads where you are happy it's a big fat book....cause you never want the story to end cause you are enjoying the read so much.

I read it on my ipad but it didnt seem long at all. It's probably because I couldn't put it down but I finished it in less than a week.

I didn't care for the first episode. With eight episodes I was hoping it would be more faithful to the book. It seems like they were in a hurry to get to Dallas to hook in viewers. It just seemed very rushed. Also not sold on Franco. I've liked him in other things but he seems too smug in this role.

Just finished the book tonight
Is Franco seriously in Dallas by the end of the first episode?

He's in Dallas by the middle of the first episode.

frick Hulu for rolling this out weekly instead of the Netflix & Amazon model. Had they done it all at once I'd be willing to pay for it, instead I'm going to wait until it's over and then torrent the shite out of it.
Is this a pg-13ish type show, or more like an R?

PG-13 so far. A few f-bombs here and there.

SPOILER
So is the Dunning storyline sped through or just forgotten about totally?

No but things are out of order. That plot line is ongoing.

It's R, I frick was uttered 20+ times at the very least and they showed a CIA guy banging a chick in a bar.
The biggest change is they showed Jake getting to Dallas and tracking George de Mohrenschildt in the first episode, then giving up and going back to Maine after his apartment burns down. Then they have him at the very end of the episode going to save Harry's siblings from their dad. That all happened first in the book as his trial run.
I also read that a character in the book ends up being Jake's partner in the whole matter (and in the book he acts 100% alone). They use him as a way to internalize Jake's monologues without having to use a narrator and I'm not sure how I feel about that either. It will take from the lone ranger feel of the book.

you're welcome, it's a 5 year old book man, and you are in the season long thread that people discussed the book in the first few posts.

People said way more than I did, I only mentioned what they actually showed in the first episode, you know, in the season long thread you are in.
I talked about the first episode, the one that came on 2 days ago, in the season long thread. You are a fricking tool.
