6 or 8 would be my vote. 4 is not enough imo.

Exactly. And with a 16 game playoff, those teams who have a juggernaut in their conference still have meaningful games to get an at-large bid.

Imagine a late season rivlary game that also had playoff implications...

Why would it be fair for Ohio State to have to play an extra game to win the championship?
Not necessarily fair. Definitely better, though.

I think conference championships are everything, I'd be in favor of going back to bowl tie-ins and a vote after it's all done. Bowl tie-ins with conference champions are played on New Years day and everyone else is already done.

Bowl games in themselves are just lagniappe, no way there should be an extended season like the pros. College football is regional (fan interest, recruiting, most game locations) and championships should be as such.

ESPN has money to make though...

I've said I support 8 unless they get down to 4 'super' conferences.

5 Conference Champs
3 at large (auto stipulation for Boise type team if team is in top 10 or something)

If they go to 4, have conference semifinals and finals (so it's like a 16 team playoff but more regional until the "final four"). Do this like the first 2 weeks of December so you aren't interrupting anything, then do the final four new years and the week after

I think 2011 Bama/ 2003 Oklahoma type teams should never make the playoff. 8 team would let too many like that in

the truth is the number of teams that should be included in a playoff depends on the year more than anything. There are years where two teams separate themselves (are the only two to run the table in a major conference). There are other years where there are more than four teams with similar credentials and who gets the nod is mostly a matter of that team's recent reputation/success more than this year's results.

Having said that, if there's going to be a format I think six teams makes sense. By the time you get to eight teams you pretty consistently include too many teams who were already fairly eliminated from consideration (2006 for example I'd point to LSU and Michigan even tho they were top four teams).

If there's going to be a system then I can live with six teams - take the top four conference champs (from any conference if the midmajor was good enough) and then include the top two at large bids. I sort of hate that because it will lessen the importance of regular season results, but hopefully it at least minimizes that damage.

I think top 10 would be perfect. It would be better than March Madness.

8, IMO, would be the best scenario.

Sure, there will be bitching by the 9 & 10 teams who were left out, but those guys would have at least 1 loss, probably 2.

You want to make to the Great 8? Don't lose two games.

I wouldn't mind 8 but 16 is too many.

It doesn't matter what N is. You'll always get bitching from N+1 and N+2. shite there are 65 teams in the basketball tournament and still the 66th & 67th teams gripe about not getting in.

IMO 4 is entirely too few teams. 16 is the absolute max, but probably a bit too much. I'd go 8-12. This would include all of the major conf champs + a few great teams who finished 2nd in their conf + maybe one mid-major who had an outstanding season. Go back to an 11 schedule. Get rid of the conf. championship games. Do away with the bowl system. I know it's tradition, but CFB's postseason bowl system is essentially just a bunch of meaningless exhibition games. Win or lose, the season ends. It's not like there's a whole hell of a lot on the line other than a goofy trophy and a t-shirt. Obviously though, money keeps the bowl system around, so I don't know if it would every truly be replaced.

8 is just too many if you care about the devaluation of the regular season. The only thing that makes college football special compared to other sports (esp the NFL) is the importance of regular season games.

Sometimes even a couple of the top four teams (like in 2006) have already been fairly eliminated from consideration IMO.
