Would OKC have the Thunder if Katrina never happened?

From what I remember, and I could be wrong, but OKC became a desirable destination for an NBA franchise after the Hornets played some home games there during the Katrina aftermath. The fan support was very inspiring. Seems like it would be a weird destination for a team not knowing how great the support would be.

If Katrina doesn't happen, do the Sonics move there? And if not- where would they be now?

What if Seattle didn't get buttfricked, does OKC have the thunder?

If Katrina didn't happen neither OKC or New Orleans would have a team.

WUT? The owner was born and raised in Oklahoma City and is a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Oklahoma. That's the only reason why they moved there.

I remember in the immediate after math of Katrina, Shinn came off as the great savior of NOLA sports and Benson the a-hole.....boy has that narrative changed.

As long as Clay Bennett and Aubrey were going to be allowed to a buy a team, which I think they would have no matter what, they were always moving to OKC.

I am going to catch heat for this because people like to revise history on this board. But the Saints were leaving NOLA without Katrina. Blanco's deals were set up to fail and giving Benson every reason to move to San Antonio. There were even free ticket giveaways to at Schwegmann's to get blackouts lifted the season prior. It was inevitable.

He bought the team after Katrina, after Shinn tried to partner with him to move the Hornets to OKC and the league said FU.

OKC showed they could support a team, so everyone knew that Bennett would move Sonics when he bought them, including the league that approved the sale.

But would the league have allowed an owner to buy a team with the intention of moving them to OKC without the concrete knowledge that OKC could support a team?

Maybe Stern doesn't allow Bennet to buy if OKC hadn't already shown that they would support a team.

He would have allowed the purchase, it was not Stern who allowed it, it is the owners. Stern just was like Goodell a mouthpiece for them.

People give Stern credit, but he took all the backlash for the lockout in 99? In 11 the owners took the heat because of revenue, that was because the owners did their own talking that time.

Ha? Go look at press conferences from the 98 lockout and get back at me.

You and Mulder hate Goodell and the NFL office so much it clouds your judgment.

You guys blame him from the Lindbergh kidnapping to Sadaam hiding the gas. It isnt him that is changing the rules of the game it is the owners. He works for the owners.

Benson should wake up every day thanking his lucky stars for Tagliabue.

I agree with this - the one preseason game I went to in 2005 before the storm had like 20,000 people at it tops. The season ticket base was disgruntled and hovering around 25,000 - one of the worst figures in the entire league. I had moved to these great seats on the lower level 35 yardline about 16 rows from the field and there was the option to buy 4 more seats around me. The Saints were likely done unless Jindal gave away the farm. The Hornets might have actually survived longer than the Saints, because if we lost the NFL you know that the state and city would have fought tooth and nail to not lose the NBA as well.

as a city and a market, we were bigger but more lackadaisical... we always thought 55k for the saints and 13k for the hornets was enough. we didnt know until katrina that we needed to sell the bitches out.

of course it doesn't hurt to have Brees, CP3, and now AD who are three of the five best athletes in NOLA history. the only pre-Katrina names who compare are Pistol Pete and Archie
