re: Worst Fake Excitement?

Especially since the WC is mainly a vessel to convert older viewers, who would never put soccer above other sports anyway. The younger generation, 25 and under, has already been converted about soccer. The question of to what degree and in comparison to other sports won't be evident for 10-15 years
I made it a point to sit down and watch the Champions League final on Saturday. I actually got excited about it during the week. And it didn't disappoint.

is that because we are supposed to suck?
More to do with timing of matches, I think.

It's going to make it worse. For years people have watched wondering when it would happen again. Now that it has, what's the draw?

Same. I'm probably a little biased because the WC really kicked up my international and EPL interest over the last year, but I hear about soccer from more of my friends and acquaintances (who aren't prototypical soccer fans) than in years' past.
It's a long season with decent television coverage. It's also a "challenge" for the US that people can get in on the ground floor of. We'll continue to be held back by a mediocre domestic league, but soccer is doing fine in the United States.

Also hopefully Fox won't pull an NBC and hold the big matches for primetime while every other news organization in the country will try to sabotage them by spoiling the results.

The domestic league's level of play is certainly a factor, but if the USMNT can keep playing at a pretty high level and move forward with their progress, then it will keep growing just from that alone.
The US will be hosting the Copa América Centenario next year, it will be really interesting to see how much coverage and publicity that gets. Then piggy that back with the US possibly/probably getting a bid to the 2017 Confederation Cup (they at least will be in the play-in game) and we could be on the verge of some really high profile matches for the USMNT outside of the World Cup which would be awesome.

They won't do that. They said they are having them live on FS1

I dont think the excitement was fake for any of the events. You can really get into all of it without being a diehard

Also, Fox is airing the next one, so it is bound to have shitty quality. Say what you want about ESPN, but they do a great job with soccer. Fox just puts soccer in the same robot-centric crap that they do for football. Also, I doubt Fox's streaming service will come close to ESPN's.

That is actually a question now with all of the FIFA scandals coming to light.

As long as they have no robots, marching bands, and Gus Johnson, I'll be okay.
But I agree with your point. ESPN's original programming outside of Bob Ley and 30 for 30 is pretty shitty and I don't like their NBA coverage compared to TNT, but two things I think they do well are soccer and college football.

I don't see them cancelling it. That would be awful though.

Yeah, it would be awesome to have the stars that play for Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Colombia come to the US. I hope everything goes as planned, but not sure what will happen.

Yeah, Messi, James, etc. would be an awesome draw.
I'm sure the US will have at least one big ame in their pool which will create a bunch of excitement and it'll be in primetime

Friendly reminder for everyone reading this thread,
the US plays Germany on Wednesday at 1:45 CST. That should be a fun match with the US coming off a historical win vs Netherlands the other day

I remember during the 2010 Winter Olympics when the U.S. played in the gold medal game in men's hockey, the talking heads were proclaiming that it would lead to renewed excitement in the NHL and the growth of hockey in America. Of course, there was a short term payoff and then the NHL sank back into irrelevance.

it can be as big as hockey in some parts of the country, dont think it will ever be as big as baseball
I actually think it has a bigger following than hockey already and will overtake baseball in popularity in the next 20 years. Soccer already has a big following in the younger demographics, and baseball's diehard fans trend older.
And I say this as someone who hates soccer and is a baseball fan.
However, as a mainstream "premier" sport, it won't be in the same stratosphere as football or basketball in my lifetime, unless football is undone by the convergence of the cross-NFL/collegiate issues of concussions and amateurism.

I'm really not trying to bring down every great US soccer comment you make in this thread, but this game is just another reason for me to dread Fox's coverage of the WC. This will be the second time that Fox will not show a USMNT game for Uverse customers because of their contract battle with Uverse. Fox got the rights to the US games after signing a contract with Uverse and now they are doing the television version of holding out by not showing the game until Uverse pays up.
