Which of these flash in the pans are worse?

-Triple Crown will make horse racing mainstream again

-Pacio v Mayweather will reignite boxing

-USMNT's World Cup performance will make soccer the premier sport in America

Couldn't care less about animals running or watching 2 hundred pound geezers slap fight each other. USMNT are the only one of these I can get excited about.

Certainly there weren't many people who actually believed this.

Soccer has come a long way in the U.S. and it's only going to get better, but it'll never be THE premiere sport in this country. And that's okay.

No sane person claimed this. Soccer will continue to grow in popularity, though.

No one ever said that about the WC. Not even if the US won it. However, it does have and will continue to have a major impact. It's a shame we got jobbed out of hosting in 2022, it would've come at a perfect time, just as the most soccer loving generation yet was coming of age.

Soccer will never be the premier sport in America. But it's growth in the last 15 years has been exponential, and it wouldn't shock me if it's at least equal to if not bigger than hockey and baseball in the next 20 years, as old timers who hate it out of principle die off and the younger FIFA generations begin having children and passing their fandom down.

Triple Crown was definitely worth watching and the World Cup was one of my highlights of 2014 (when I wasn't even a very big soccer fan). Both very worthy of hype.

Not many people made the claims you're putting out there, though.

This. It was never hyped as this by anyone. It was just that it is growing and will continue to grow.

IMO, the US needed to advance last year to really capitalize on the moment. Would've been really cool to see the hype & energy surrounding the sport if the US beat Belgium and played on July 4th Weekend. In the end of the day, they only won one game and the next World Cup will not be as TV friendly for American viewers.

Ehhh 2002 was as bad as it could get for TV purposes and it was still huge bc we made the quarters.

But really the WC isn't that important anymore for soccer's growth. It's FIFA. It's more European games on mainstream sports channels. It's the ease of finding content, streams, highlights on the Internet. The MLS won't ever be as big as the MLB, but the concept of soccer being as big as the concept of baseball is much more conceivable.

Especially since the WC is mainly a vessel to convert older viewers, who would never put soccer above other sports anyway. The younger generation, 25 and under, has already been converted about soccer. The question of to what degree and in comparison to other sports won't be evident for 10-15 years

I'm guessing it's not played in our time zone--probably live at 3 in the morning like Korea.

It's (probably) going to be held in Russia. It's 7 hours ahead of us.
