the problem I have with some of my fellow USMNT fans is they act like they don't want others getting in on the fun
they have this "you aren't a REAL fan" mentality
it's the national team - EVERY American is welcome to come and cheer regardless of when you decided to care

I'm having a watch party at my house on Monday. I'm even inviting people that I know never watch soccer. Telling them to at least come and have a beer.

In an attempt to win biggest douche award, there are over 200 teams in the World Cup. Only 32 qualify for the World Cup finals

I've never run across this...

In every large group (here soccer fans) there is going to be an innsufferable shite. But every watch party i've been to has plenty of folks who are new to the game, or uniterested, but enjoy a good cook out and beer. Now usually there is one guy who does snob it up, but there is also usually one that makes 'paint dry comments' so i consider it a wash makign one no better than the other.

Haha. True. I felt adding "final" to "World Cup" would mislead people.

I'll kindly tell that guy to GTFO.

Exactly. Like I said, I don't follow soccer much. But I have been reading about the matchups and watching the show on ESPN2 following the team.
I'm excited and ready.

why does it say that one soccer ball = 1 million who viewed at least a minute. Maybe they should have done the same for the Super Bowl. Then the number for the Super Bowl would probably be quadrupled. still far less than the World Cup though
I came to post this exact thing. I mean, the numbers are still very impressive, but what's this "at least one minute" stuff.
I don't watch soccer, and I honestly cant say that I ever "watched the World Cup", but if someone asked me if I had ever watched at least one minute of the World Cup, I'd have to say yes. I'm sure it's been on at friend's houses in the past when I was in the room, and I'm sure I've seen highlights on sports center that lasted more than one minute.

Considering the NFL is pretty muched only watched in the U.S., the viewership for the Super Bowl is more impressive.
The Super Bowl had an estimated 111.5 million viewers, yes? Though viewership is not out for the 2014 World Cup (obviously), Nielsen reported that the 2010 World Cup had an estimated 111.6 million viewers in the United States. That's a 22% increase from the 2006 World Cup, which was estimated to have 91.4 million viewers in the United States.

Is it total viewership during the whole tournament?
If so, that is comparing apples to oranges.

Without reading through this thread (I'm sure it has been covered already), I call bullshite on 1 billion people watching the WC.
No way 1-in-7 people in this world watch soccer.
Think about all the old arse, 90 year old senile folks out there. They ain't watching the WC. Think about all the women out there, majority of them don't give a frick either. Think about all the poor folks out there living on the streets of Detroit, Guangzhou, Mumbai, etc etc. These folks don't care about some game, they care about getting their next meal, or next high. Does India or China even have a team?
No way 1-in-7 watch the WC. That number just isn't realistic. 1-in-15 I might believe......maybe

I'm thinking they are counting total viewers throughout the whole tournament.
And if that's the case, then it doesn't mean shite.

If so, that is comparing apples to oranges.
99.2 million viewers through the Round of 16 and the advanced stages picked up an extra 12.4 million viewers domestically.
It is an apples to oranges comparison, though. It is difficult to determine if one is 'more impressive' than the other. Personally, I don't find one to be more impressive than the other. The Super Bowl is a single game and the World Cup is a tournament in which the United States is playing just once every five days or so.
