if it wasn't for the scandal, would coaches view psu as an elite destination?

PA is probably a top 10 state for talent, though definitely not top 7. However, they're the only major school close to the elite jersey catholic leagues. They are really the biggest program for the entire northeast and even the DC area.

The stadium is big, huge fan base, etc. seems like you could pull talent just as good as a Michigan could.

What constitutes "elite?"

Penn State is a Top 20 job today (the luster had worn off before the scandal). At one point it was a Top 10 job.

Penn State hasn't really been an "elite" job since Sandusky left.

Yes. 10 years from now it will hopefully be a tier 1 job again.

I don't think it would be. They're in a division with OSU, UM and MSU. Your competing with OSU, VT and WVU for talent too and there isn't near as much in the Northeast as there is in the South.

Then, no, it is not an elite job. Hasn't been since the mid-to-late 90s.

I feel like they should be the third best Big 10 job with a chance to win 9+ every year.

You're wrong about talent. Penn State made a living owning east coast recruiting including Maryland and northern Virginia. They also ruled New Jersey. Those are fertile recruiting grounds if you're the top dog pulling in the talent.

Valid, but it wasn't too long ago that psu was way better than msu.

Penn st without the scandal is a way more attractive place for recruits than vt and wvu.

Virginia was always split on recruiting. The tidewater kids went to VT (mostly) while the northern VA kids were Penn State.

It can still be elite now, Franklin is just really struggling a lot more than I thought he would. O'Brien would have them in much better shape had he stayed.

If the scandal never came to light, Joe Paterno would still be alive and "coaching" at Happy Valley and Jay Paterno would still be the legacy in waiting.

They finished ranked #3 in 05, and #8 in 08.

Undoubtedly

They have the Northeast to themselves, basically. Have the facilities and tradition. Nike money, as they are part of the original Big 8 of Nike.

How much does that mean in football? They recruited those same areas and they were no longer "elite" before the scandal.
As stated above they probably would've promoted someone on staff as Paterno's replacement if the shite never hit the fan, so they aren't guaranteed to have had a great coach.

No longer elite?

They were in a BCS game in 05 and 09? They had played in Cap 1 bowl vs LSU also. They were elite.
