With baseball speeding up the game, can we get basketball to have less timeouts?

Every end of a close basketball game takes forever because of all the timeouts. Can we take away at least one timeout for each team so the end of a game doesn’t take forever?

Basketball needs a form of line changes like hockey.
No more horn and sitting waiting for sub
Someone come up with a way in this thread and I’ll get it over to Silver

they would never do it, but they should have a 15 second shot clock.
that alone would cut at least 40 minutes off of the time each game takes

Elam Ending. Make it happen.

Is it the timeouts that cause the game to drag (don't help) or the fact that there is a foul with foul shots with damn near every possession once they get under a minute.
To minimize TOs in the last few minutes, you could set a maximum # of TOs in the final 3 minutes.
In regard to the person that wants a hockey style line change; couldn't you just have each team have their benches at half court, but on opposite sides and have a hockey style line change? Speaking of benches, I always find it funny how little room they give these huge guys to cram in when not playing. I suppose by having them at half court, you could have them 3 rows deep so everyone isn't jammed in along the court.

Casual BB fan here and I dislike how games turn into free throw competitions at the end of games.
If they could speed up FTs in the final 3 minutes between subs/players' shooting rituals/resets that would be nice.

There's no reason to have team timeouts in basketball, I realized that when I became an Aussie rules fan, which is a lot like basketball with the way the game flows. Timeouts give basketball coaches too much chance to micromanage the game. It's not like they can't coach without timeouts, they are feet away from the players communicating all game.
Just have set TV timeouts during the game and let the end of games play out in real time so players will have to handle it on the fly.
And usually the broadcaster is out of commercial time by the end of games so the broadcast stays on the court during the timeout anyway.
Plus the big bonus would be eliminating bailout timeouts players can call when they get trapped or can't get the ball inbounds or are falling out of bounds.

This makes no sense. How would this speed up the time of the games? If anything, with more possessions, you'd likely get more free throws which would ultimately slow down the game.

most teams have to waste the timeout before end of first half that you lose anyway
just eliminate that one timeout
just eliminate that one timeout

You really think the NBA wants to cut out that many commercials?

Should probably work on having every good player in the league not miss 30 games a season and stop giving Lebrons team 15 more FT attempts a game then every other team before making a decision on pace of game
It's not like anyone is watching the regular season anyways shite is garbage

It's keakar. His modus operandi is not making sense.

100% this.
I don’t know if the fouls should be handled differently in the last 2 mins or what but there should be some disincentive for fouling every possession late.

Half a year of playoffs would be my first change.

Best I can do is putting Black Lives Matter on the court. Take it or leave it.

In close games, it ratchets up the intensity. In games that are 8-10 points in difference, it turns them into grass growing. And the latter happens more often. Make fouls within the last two minutes punitive. If you are in the double bonus, you don't get 2 shots, you get the ball with a fresh clock.

An observation about timeouts.
The timeouts/commercials aren't as bad if you're at a basketball game because they have entertainment during them. Hoop jumping dogs, crawling baby races, guys dunking from trampolines, etc.
Sitting thru timeouts/commercials at a football game is much worse than sitting thru them at home. At home, most of the time I'm hoping for a timeout soon to go urinate.

This is the worst idea I’ve ever heard. You clearly have never hooped before.
