Watched the documentary 'Fastball' on Netflix yesterday and didn't realize just how dominant Nolan really was.

8x All Star
11x K leader
7x No-hitters

Career ERA of 3.19
Career K's: 5,714

Played for 27-seasons and his last pitch at I believe age 46 was a 98-mph FB. He mentions in the documentary that he averaged around 150-170 pitches a game and even pitched all 14 innings in a game against Boston where he pitched more than 230 pitches.

I'd rather Pedro, or another Astros great, Randy Johnson.

Out of everything in his long career including the no-hitters, Nolan's numbers in the 1970's are remarkable.

A pitcher's W/L record is honestly the WORST possible stat to measure them by

My criteria is the dominance in the person's best years.

Pedro #1

Koufax #2 (brief blaze of glory for a few years once he got control)

Kershaw 3

Bob Gibson 4a
Steve Carlton 4b (when he had control two different times in his long career)

Randy Johnson 5a asswipe ruined J T Snow's career but...
Ryan 5b

Baumgartner

That's four of the five I had along with Kershaw. Now Kershaw hasn't quite matched Ryan's whole career and I doubt he ever catches his longevity and counting stats, but on a per-game basis, Kershaw is clearly better.

I am taking these four over Nolan Ryan every time. Pedro's 98-99 seasons were absolutely insane when you consider the era. He's my choice if we are taking these guys in their prime

ETA meant 99 and 2000 seasons

Agreed on Kershaw. I just always list that incredible quartet together. I thought those were enough to prove my very obvious point.

yes and I want to add that he was must-see TV. I was so excited to watch him pitch in the WS and playoffs.

He was like watching Barry Bonds. I had to watch.

no one else close, and I was a Carlton fan after being pissed that the Phils traded Rick Wise for him. Rick Wise had just pitched a no hitter.
I enjoyed watching Carlton pitch.
I loved watching Pedro.
