Since Jim Crane took over in 2012 and through this season the astros have spent $346,290,602 in total payroll over those 5 seasons which comes out to ~$69.2 million average payroll. According to Baseball Reference, the 2017 estimated payroll for the Astros(Guaranteed + Options + Arb) will be $72.1 million. Link:LINK

The astros, tonight notwithstanding need help on offense and pitching is a huge need as seen by the entire season, however there aren't any real good pitching options out there in the winter. However the two marquee free agents this winter will be Cespedes and Ian Desmond who would both be upgrades over what the astros already have and I believe they could open up the coffers and make terrific offers to both. What say you guys

He needs to or fans will get disinterested.

Having a stocked farm system is great, but you can't rely on rookies to carry the team every year.

Need some quality veterans to fill the gaps

That would be in the trade market.

The pitching hasn't been spectacular but the offense is much more troubling, 5-9 specifically.

You can handle 1 or 2 dead spots in a lineup, but not 5.

Not sure this is the off season to do it. The FA market is mostly shite which will drive up the prices for the few desirable pieces

This! It's not a good offseason to spend money just for appearances.

If we do throw some cash around it should be to lock up the big 3 Correa, Altuve and Springer.

Doesn't matter when players don't want to play for our GM

I certainly dont want a 5 yr/$100m deal for jared weaver. SP are so overpaid today its disgusting. I wouldnt mind iwakuma from the mariners he's a solid AL pitcher. I wanted justin turner for 3b for a while but with 19 homers in the last few months he probably drove his price through the roof. We're gonna have altuve/springer/correa/gurriel/bregman as 5 everyday guys next year. The rest of the lineup we can be fine if its trash, our 2005 world series team had 4 or 5 black holes in the regular lineup and we were fine bc of pitching. So shoring up our rotation is #1 by far because keuchel, mchugh just wont cut it as your 1-2 punch. Mccullers is an an ace but he seems to have injury issues. We just need a good starter or two and pray keuchel regains his cy young form

Spend big money on who? Desmond? Ramos?

They need pitching and this FA class is total shite.

The worst free agent class in years on the heels of potentially one of the best ever... Tough.

If they do it won't be on anyone great, pretty weak FA class.

I'd much rather shore up the offense than pitching.

The starters are manageable when you don't have to rely on the top 4 in the lineup to produce ALL the runs

ETA: Ramos, Desmond, Encarnacion, etc. need 1 or 2 veteran bats

I think Id rather Josh reddick or Fowler over Cespedus or Desmond. Desmond is going to cost a ton and Cespedus is questionable in the locker room.

I guess we could make a run at lucroy too but thats the only other place in the FA pool. Bregman has come around and Teo looks to be solid. Just hope reed keeps coming along too. We have some pieces still on the farm to put a package together to deal for pitching.

the greatest need is bats

need to fill at least 3 of 4 needs

C
1B
DH
OF

they MIGHT have answers at ONE of those in the
A if Bregman gets more time in the OF next year in Spring Training
or B
the Cuban can be taught to play first if he struggles at 3rd and of course

C either MIGHT be an upgrade at DH at a minimum

so Houston MIGHT already have 1/3 answers OF 1B DH

but MAYBE ,just a 3B with a better stick

easiest to fill is DH,, rent-a-stick

I think C is the greatest need ,

the 'stros have at 3 players that could at least be serviceable at 1b

then your left with the OF

its a mess

but the ONE question you don't have an answer for is C

and theres not a lot available as FA
