Will CTE be a big issue going forward in football?

While watching the 85 Bears 30 for 30 Jim MacMahon talked about his treatment and how it is working. What I took from some of the stuff he said was that the damage won't be fixed because of the fluid sitting on his brain for so long. Now that they know how to treat it better and are proactive in getting ahead of it I don't think that it will be such a big deal 10 years from now when you take in account medical advancements.

The liberals want to destroy football because of the culture of patriotism and traditional masculinity it represents.

"Treat"? The treatment for recurrent head injuries is to not put yourself in the same situation anymore. i.e. Retirement.
There is no real treatment or many medical advances for CTE. As I understand it, it's essentially a disease of micro brain injury? Tissue and vascular changes. If they can treat that then you would hear about Alzheimers break through.
CTE cat is out of the bag. Never again will it go back. Going back in after your "bell rung" won't happen. Which is a good thing IMO. Also helmet advances were a good thing. Helmets had not changed in 20+ years until Peyton broke his jaw and wore the helmet with the bigger jawpiece/ear piece.

Yeah, my pastor told me that if Bernie Sanders is elected, the first thing he'll do is push for an amendment banning American football and apple pies.

quote:Well the way I understood it in the MacMahon situation is that he had fluid sitting on his brain for a long period of time due to his spinal cord being out of line and that is what caused a lot of his damage. He said after the first treatment that it was a huge relief, "like a toilet flushing." I assumed that if you treat to constantly remove fluid off the brain that a player won't have the same major effects.

What was the treatment?
Not trying to pick an e-fight with you, I honestly do not know. A shunt? A craniotomy? Therapeutic drain of spinal fluid by lumbar puncture (don't know the validity of that)?
All of those options suck and are not to be taken lightly.

I heard that sermon, too

quote:He said that they were treating his neck because there was a blockage in his neck not allowing the fluid flush out of his brain. He didn't say exactly when he started his treatments, so they may have been treating him this way for years. They way they presented it though may it seem that he had not been treated that way for a very long time.

It's a huge deal now and I don't think that controversy is going anywhere. We're just learning about it.

A VP Shunt is a common thing. But it is not temporary. At the time his issues began I am sure his options were more limited than they are now as far as procedures go and the downtime that would follow if he were still playing.
Today there are advances in performing the function of draining fluid, but still not to be taken lightly like a colonoscopy or something.

I'm a conservative.
Have a downvote

He said that all the toxic unfiltered fluid had been sitting in his brain for 20+ years causing irreparable damage. Hopefully the new treatments combat any further damage.

Not to say that some fluid on the brain doesn't cause damage, but that wasn't the catalyst to CTE.

It is already a big issue.

treatment
Also, the biggest threat CTE presents for football is that parents aren't allowing children to play the game anymore. In a couple of decades, that is going to catch up with the sport.

I believe CTE can only be definitively diagnosed on autopsy.

Wonder if it will cause a surge in Americans in the MLB in 10-15 years?
