Ita boring compared to say, MotoGP, where guys are going faster, on an infield track, risking their lives on motorcycles.

Is it just the promotion becauase the entertainment value isn't nearly as good in my opinion.

If I had to guess it's because almost all of the drivers are from the United States.

I grew up watching Nascar with my dad, only reason I enjoy it. He's worked Mars Candy his entire life and we had shitty drivers my entire life until Kyle Busch. It definitely makes it easier to watch when the car I've always cheered for wins.

Because we're the only place that has real sports to watch instead of soccer.

NASCAR rose from regional to national popularity when management realized that the key for fans was having personalities to root for and against (like WWE). When drivers feud on track (bumping) and off track (throwing punches), NASCAR may pay lip service to cleaning things up, but the reality is those feuds are great for business.

NASCAR's rise coincided with the cultural importance of the Indy 500 disappearing almost instantly with the Indycar split of '96. I think Jeff Gordon's championships also helped because he was apparently loved and hated in equal measure. NASCAR must be super frustrated that Dale Earnhardt Jr. can't win a championship because he is the most popular driver. Tony Stewart was great for business too, and I'm sure they are sorry to see him go.

NASCAR fans are not race fans, they are NASCAR fans. True race fans are pretty rare, I think it's true even in countries where racing is relatively popular. True race fans understand, appreciate, and enjoy the subtleties and differences between F1, Indycar, Le Mans prototypes, GT3, rally, etc., and outside of seeing them at the track, it's very hard to find real race fans among the people you meet day-to-day.

That's a very good point. I stumbled into NASCAR through some work circumstances, and started following and watching.

I don't watch any other racing at all. I'd probably like other racing, but I don't have time to add one more thing to follow.

Because it's easily understood by dumb people.

I've always wondered this as well. I don't really enjoy racing all that much but formula 1 type racing seems a lot more entertaining than nascar. Curious why it's not more popular here.

I like the moto GP a lot better also. Much more exciting spectator sport to watch. Just that NASCAR is all over the airways and all you really hear about.

Probably has something to do with the history of stock car racing and that people use to like to soup up their own cars (in the 50's, 60's and 70's) and felt they could relate in some way as opposed to motorcycle and other types of racing.

Now it's just the momentum that NASCAR built up.

Plus the convienence of having a circular track for attending an event. Can watch the whole race go round and round from the stands and also have a party on the infield.

I think NASCAR has peaked. You don't hear about its great ratings like you did in early 2000's. To me, it's trending downward. Jimmie Johnson's unprecedented run actually hurt the sport IMO.

This has a big part of it. The cars are much more relateable than F1 cars, for instance.

explain what you mean by relatable. To me the F1 cars are much much cooler than Nascar vehicles.

The F1 "cars" don't look anything like what can be bought by the average person.

F1 racing is not as popular in the US due to the airing of the races are typically at odd times because of the location of the races, and once the races start it is mostly follow the leader.

I think he means that the average person can relate to a NASCAR car better than something like an F1 car, Indycar or Le Mans Prototype. They look like something that you could go down to the Chevy dealership and buy. But Stock cars haven't been stock in a long time.

I follow F1 and it has its own problems right now. There is one team (Mercedes) that is utterly dominant and everybody else is fighting for 2nd. The rules keep changing and aren't enforced consistently. Going to a race is expensive and watching on TV is pay-per-view in a lot of places. So it's hemorrhaging fans. The cars sound awful and don't really look that good either (compared to previous eras).

MotoGP is very exciting because there is a lot of overtaking back and forth. In F1, not so much.

Ole baw can imagine himself as Billy Joe out there driving around in circles. Not so much as Reinhard piloting a starship around the Grand Prix course.

Richard Petty, '79 fight btn Allison and Yarborough on national tv, Bill Elliott winning a million, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, ESPN and other media, expansion to non traditional tracks making it more popular national(short term gain only)

But taking away races from the traditional tracks and The Chase are killing the sport.

NASCAR is evidently above the intelligence level of some posters.
