Thye dont want him there reaching career milestones and breaking records. They want him to just go away. Either send him to minors or designate him for assignment.

Yankees need A-Rod honestly, as bad as they were offensively last year and in his last year he hit .272/.353./.430 with 18 home runs if he comes close to that the Yankees should be estatic

they don't really have a better option than a used up arod.

A-rod should have pulled a Andy and squirted some tears over his steroid use. They would have no problem paying him and immortalizing him.

I can't see how that wouldn't cause the MLBPA to go apeshit.

Assuming something like 10/5 rights doesn't just outright prevent a move like you're suggesting.

Why? If a team wants to designate a player to a farm team they are entitled to do so

yea...if performance dictates it. Do you not recall the MLBPA going nuts on the astros about not bringing up springer.

It's their job to protect the rights of the players.

You think a club saying, go to the minors, we don't want you breaking records, is going to pass muster?

i think it does, actually.
I don't know the criteria but I'm fairly certain certain qualified players can refuse the assignment.

You can't just send a player without options to the minors.

There's protocol for that.

Any player with 5 years of service time can reject an assignment.

Doesn't matter how many options he has left.

yea but that option has to be a whole lot better to make it worth eating the 61 mil.

It might be for the best though considering it still looks like a pretty nasty rift between him and the team. I mean they ask him to do a simple apology and he comes up with a lame written one instead of doing what they ask.

I've always been fuzzy on options. Do you have 3 times you can be sent down/called up (example: 3 meaning 2012, 2014, 2016) or is it once you're called up (and spend a certain amount of time [60 days i think]) you've only got 3 years to be optioned (example called up in 2012, so you've got 3 option years 13,14 and 15 and by 2016 you can't be optioned)?

Seems irrelevant for this conversation, I'm just trying to learn something in a stupid thread.

You have three option years (defined as a season in which you are on the 40 man and spend 21 days or more in the minors I believe excluding rehab assignments). Once you accumulate 5 years of ML Service Time you cannot be optioned without permission.

Again A-Rod is actually a player who could help the Yankees.... If he can not they will probably release him and eat the salary without incentives

Because they can't without his permission.

Then they can either release him or leave him on the active roster, either way it cost them 61 million dollars.

Yankees owe 61 million regardless and 6 million if he passes Mays (660) which is going to happen. That is it A-Rod won't pass Bonds or Ruth at this point, Yankees better hope dude can play a little and provide a little insurance.

$61 mil specifically? Not many. But plenty of people have been paid millions to play minor league ball.
