Why don't the Nats shut down Strasburg NOW

And use him in the post season? This seems dumb to use his "inning limit" now and not in post season

It's impossible to completely shut down a pitcher only to use him a little over a month later.
A SP's routine for preparing for pitching in the majors requires constant throwing whether it's a bullpen in the middle of the week before he pitches on the weekend, casual tossing the day before, or pitching in a game.
You can't just "shut down" Strasburg if you expect him to throw in a little over a month away.

They should have him skip two or three starts between now and the end of September. Not back-to-back starts either.

They should have been doing this throughout the season so they had plenty of innings left over for the end. There has been a myriad of ways they could have freed up innings for a potential playoff run without damaging him and they failed to do it.

They can't just skip starts. I would prefer they go to a six man rotation and bring in Lannan. I think that would help a lot.

If i was a Nats season ticket holder I would be beyond pissed that they would throw away a postseason run for this. Unless he has shown signs of arm distress or fatigue i dont really see a reason to do this

He has a history of elbow problems and he is a hard thrower. His future is more important than a run this year.
I could see him topping out at 170-180 innings this year. That seems fairly reasonable.

I wanna be watching the moment he reaches 160 innings and gets pulled. I hope it's in the middle of an inning. Nothing malicious, I like strasburg, but that would be riveting TV.

I thought they should have done this awhile ago. I don't watch the Nats on a regular basis but Lannan isn't exactly a liability when he pitches every 6 games is he?

Difference being, their are 4 other pitchers on the team. It is easier to set up a dynasty in baseball than in football. I can guarantee you that the Nats will be in the same position for the foreseeable future

They should definitely try one of these options. Maybe they could even just use him in relief for the playoffs. Seems like that would be better than nothing.

But then they lose an arm in the bullpen... thats a big issue for an NL team when it comes to late inning matchups

It's not about the rest between starts, it's about having a long period of shut down time to recover.
