Why don't players backwards lateral the ball out of bounds to stop the clock?

Wouldn't forward progress be considered stopped inbounds?

How so? There are potentially trying to get it to a teammate who wasn't in the right spot.

The fact nobody does this makes me think that the clock keeps running.

I'm pretty sure it's a penalty.

Looks like it's a five yard penalty, loss of down from the spot, but the clock stops until the ready to play whistle.
So if you get a deep pass for a first down, throw it out of bounds, take the penalty, clock the ball, kick a field goal.
Saves valuable seconds.

A lot of football coaches are dumb rednecks who aren't smart enough to think outside the box.

I think there's a 10 second run off too, still might be worth it in certain situations, but that kills the idea right at the end of a game.

It would be no different than a fumble out of bounds as long as the ball is not thrown forward there should be no penalty.

The ref will rule the clock to keep moving due to the Palpably Unfair Act.

The clock doesn't stop if you go out of bounds while moving backwards so I assume it's the same with a lateral.

quote:if a player is 10 yards from the sideline and not down by contact and throws the ball laterally out of bounds when does the official blow his whistle to call the play dead? It's no different than a fumble out of bounds. The clock stops because the ball is out of play.
