I don't know, Bolt was pretty special. And not just because of his speed. He had a perfect mix of ability, personality, and charisma. I really don't expect another Bolt in my lifetime. There will surely be people faster, but not the package that he was, capable of carrying an entire sport.

Answer is simply that in order to accommodate the track you have to set the seats back 100 feet or so from the playing field that could be used for football, soccer, etc. No football team is going to play in such stadium as it would make it harder to sell tickets.
Exactly. These modern football stadiums (AT&T in Dallas, Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta, and I think U of Phoenix in AZ) have the ability to slide different fields in and out, so they could probably figure out a way to have a track & field specific field that could be slid in. But when it isn't there, you would have a gap from the front row of seats to the edge of the field. Unless you build the first X number of rows as collapsible and then have those disappear when the track field comes in, and then row one of the track field stands would be that much higher above the edge of the field.

but I meant an NFL sized stadium, something you could play football or big soccer matches in too.

You do realize that there are more 30+ "NFL sized" stadiums where, you know NFL games are played. Many of those have hosted soccer events and several could be fitted for a track I'm sure.

what exactly did he do to "carry the entire sport?" Did he make it more popular somehow? I don't see that, at least in the US. We could see, for example, the "Tiger Woods" effect on golf, better ratings, bigger purses, more kids interested. Am i missing that with Bolt? I love watching him and winning the 100-200-4X100 triple twice was amazing, let alone 3 times, but i don't see him as bigger star than Carl Lewis was back in the day or Even Michael Johnson at his peak.

Aside from Bolt, the only other time I remember this hype surrounding track was during the Michael Johnson/Donovan Bailey era. I think they did a 1-on-1 race where Johnson pulled up lame.

I'm guessing it was in the Skydome...I wonder how many were there for that.

There was huge hype for the following

Jenner
Moses
Lewis
Nehemiah
O'Brien
Johnson

All of those guys were stories when they ran in big meets. Moses was probably most scrutinized due to his unbeaten streak that was snapped in the Olympics.

the hype was bigger back then imo. Praise/hyperbole regarding Bolt and his all time status is not the same as "hype" for the sport. Like swimming isn't getting boost from Phelps, we watch the Olympics every 4 years and don't care about most of these sports other wise.

We have more nice track and field stadiums than any other country in the world I would reckon.

If you are asking why we don't have an NFL style track and field stadium, is because nobody is going to spend a billion dollars on a stadium for a sport that doesn't generate any revenue and the general public doesn't care much about except every 4 years.

anecdotal evidence says my friends are interested in

football Oakland Raiders

basketball Golden State (Oakland) Warriors

baseball if one of the two local pro franchises (SF/OAK) is in the playoffs or doing really really well.

my best friends play golf. one watches pro golf on TV.

no one I know mentions track.

it never comes up. no one mentioned track to me in the past year.

My sisters are into pro basketball. they texted excitedly during the playoffs. I am more into college. They watch some college.
My daughters are into pro baseball and go to games as a social activity.
My guy friends are into the Oakland Raiders.
They tolerate my interest in LSU and come to the house game watching. They go in person to Raiders games.

none of the kids in my extended family do or did track or field on a team.

its not like they were not interested in sports. just not track and field.

Most NFL stadiums are built to spec to maximize the experience for NFL games... they can't be retrofitted for a track. The architecture won't allow it
