Why didn't Doug Flutie get a better shake?

Seems like most times he hit the field in the NFL the guy performed and most times he was replaced or the staff/owner tried to replace him with someone else
I was too young to remember a lot of his career but remember the last part of the Flutie/Rob Johnson battle in Buffalo and always thought it was obvious Flutie was the better choice
It even went so far as to Flutie leading the Bills to the playoffs in 1999 but Wade Phillips benching him right before the playoffs started for Johnson. Later Phillips revealed that the Bills owner ordered him to make the move.
After 2000 the Bills made a firm choice for Johnson and Flutie moved on to have a solid couple years in San Diego before becoming Brees's backup (understandable).
Meanwhile under Johnson the Bills went 3-13, he continued his injury issues, and he was replaced by the very remerable Alex Van Pelt for a couple games. Johnson was released after the season and and actually managed to win a super bowl in Tampa but was mostly never heard from again
I just always thought his time in Buffalo was very strange

Could be because he's like 5'4"

Ok but the guy played well
Who cares how tall the guy is if he delivers results?

Pretty sure people had an issue with his size. That's why he spent the majority of his career in the CFL.

They absolutely did and rightfully so to some extent
Maybe I should edit the OP ago specifically ask about the Buffalo situation

quote:He never completed a full season while at Buffalo. At best Flutie was journeyman and was their to be a placeholder until the younger QB was ready. With that being said, Johnson wasn't that great. But had the physical tools to be an NFL QB.

It was very simple. The Bills and Wilson spent a ton on Rob Johnson. You still see it to this day. The guy who they pay a lot gets chance after chance because they are trying to recoup the investment, while undrafted free agent guy can fumble once and never see the field again.
It was all about the money. Short sighted since a Buffalo Super Bowl run would have been worth way more.
Music City Miracle probably would have never happened if Flutie played the game.

Yea I get that
99 is the strangest case IMO
He was healthy, had them in the playoffs yet the owner still wanted him benched

Dude obviously rocked it in college.
And of course because the field was so wide...in Canada.
But NFL folks don't like changing things up and you had to work harder to open up passing lanes for Flutie...it was just easier to go with another guy because Flutie wasn't that much better than someone else.
Everyone talks about the Bills screwing him (and they did, big time - you dance with the one who brought you!)
But Ditka also never gave Flutie a fair shake. Yanking him in and out of games like a yo-yo.

Thanks for a good explanation, wasn't aware of what Johnson was being paid

Rob Johnson had looked good in spot duty for the Jags. Buffalo spent a wad getting him in free agency.
Sans Doug Flutie, Buffalo has been looking for a QB to replace Jim Kelly since he retired.

He was a scrappy overachiever. Teams are always looking for the prototype, granted there are exceptions, and Flutie could've been one, but I guess Ralph Wilson had other ideas.

Doug Flutie was the original Tim Tebow except he was actually good at playing football.

Well his other ideas at the end of 99 were really dumb IMO
Posted on 9/13/17 at 2:10 pm to Wishnitwas1998
this was before teams were super cap conscious. If this happened today they would have dropped Johnson imo

Y'all have to understand Flutie was 36-37 when he played with the Bills which was like retirement-age for QBs then and the Bills, like you mentioned, signed much younger Rob Johnson to a lucrative contract in preparation for the future plus he possessed all the measurables for an ideal pocket QB. This isn't rocket science this is straight Black Letter free-market football business, people should immediately infer these rationales when teams make such decisions relative to their most important position.

I remember his time with the Bears and Patriots before he went to Canada. The Bears QB situation after 1985 was a circus. McMahon was the guy, but he was constantly being injured. There was three guys rotating around when McMahon would get injured, including Flutie. They could never settle on one back up QB.
With the Patriots, their QB situation was a constant rotation of Flutie, Eason, Grogan, and Wilson. In the meantime, the team got progressively worse in the late 80's. Flutie showed some promise in New England and won some games, but they could never fully committed to just one guy.

He was short and had to roll out or move around out of the pocket to find a passing lane. Just wasn't a good fit for the NFL game.
Saw him play in the CFL and he was made for the CFL game. Matt Dunnigan from Tech was a lot like Flutie as well and played forever in the league.

Would've been a HOF drop kicker if he hadn't insisted on wasting time at QB

That's understandable but still doesn't justify Wilson's frickery in 99
